My girlfriend is wanting to get me some nice headphones for x-mas. I don't really know what I want/need to be able to tell her. I think I would like a pair that completely covers ear. I would be using them to track out tapes and listening to cds at work. Don't need anything top of the line but a nice set would be great. I was thinking maybe in the $100-150 range. Any suggestions/links?

Sony MDR-7506 are in that price range and sound pretty damn sweet. Perhaps a headphone amp is in order too?

I have three pairs of headphones: Sony 7506 (closed back), AKG K501 (open back), Etymotic ER-6 (in-ear).
I love the ER-6s for riding my m/c and situations where I want to block out external noise, e.g. planes, trains, and automobiles. Probably not applicable to your uses.
Before I lost (stolen, I suspect) my 7506s I used them at work. Can be driven nicely without a headphone amp. Not nearly as comfortable as the K501s, for me - while circumaural, they don't quite fit around my ears. I find the K501s sound significantly better overall, but that's in part due to their open vs. the 7506s closed-back design. Certainly not bad sounding, and the closed-back helps insulate your co-workers from your tunes - which is why these are the 'phones I used at work.
I loooooooooove my K501s. Tougher to drive - portables won't cut it without a headphone amp like the Airhead. Supremely comfortable circumaural fit, great sound IMO across the range though a bit light on the bass.

Mr. Big Ears Brian. I see a whole shitpile of different AKG headphones online and I don't know where to start lookin'! But all I heard were good, solid reviews about the 7506s so I went to GC and tried 'em. Sold right off the bat. Everything about them was good to me, including the price. (The guy knocked the sales tax off because I was going to send him some Meshuggah shows... his email addy didn't work, though! I'll take care of him when I'm home for Christmas... if he's still there... damn)
I also tried the Sennheiser HD280s... well, tried them on. I never got around to listening to them because they were so goddamned painful. Kevin, go to Ye Olde Local Music Shoppe and try on the phones you're considering, and get some feedback from dorks like us on what's comfy or not, because that's a huge factor, in my opinion - in fact, the deciding factor in my dealing with the HD280s.

Armen makes a great point about trying them on at a local music shop. I didn't but should have - had I known the 7506s didn't quite fit around my (apparently) big-ass ears, I wouldn't have gotten them. I hate supra-aural (on the ear) 'phones, they drive me absolutely bonkers. For me, circum-aural (around the ear) 'phones are the only way to go.

Sennheiser HD580's...i love these things...i know i need a headphone amp, but they still sound great without one...just outside your quoted range, $160 from jandr.com.

Moke's the emoticon king. I knew you were ball-bustin', Armen. I was kinda surprised the 7506s didn't fit around my ears, actually - b/c no one's ever commented on them being especially large. Uh-oh...that must mean...shit, never mind... :-X

i have a pair of sennheiser hd280's, while they can get fatigueing on your ear with extended use, i find them provide a nice warm sound to my ear and they are well worth the 100 dollars i paid for them, im sure the sony's are good too, its all about testing them out before you buy them

i have a pair sony mdr-v600's and they are great, probably not as great as some of the higher priced akg's and whatnot. i paid $100 but i think if you check out this link http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=22;action=display;threadid=8778 (http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=22;action=display;threadid=8778) there are some refurb's from sony for ~$50 if you wanna save some $ and get something else as well. just a thought.

closed headphones are for tracking in studios. For example, an acoustical guitarist will have closed headphones on and be listening to the drum track. The closed headphone style prevents leakage from the headphones into the guitar mic. I'm sure there are other uses, like isolation....
