Info on pre-amps wanted
« on: February 16, 2007, 01:58:16 PM »
Hello all,

I have been thinking about getting a pre-amp for some time now, but have little idea on which to get for my particular mics.  I have been using C4s for about a year now and also just purchased some AKG 480s w/CK-61 and CK-63 caps.  I will soon be running two independent rigs using these mics.  I have heard some people say they are not happy with the results of the V3 when used in conjunction with the 480s.

The recording device will vary, but I will most likely be running C4s>MZ-RH10 (MD) and 480s>Marantz PMD-430 (cas) or vice versa.  I also have a DAT at my disposal, which will be used for SB applications.  I have a backup M1 if needed also.  If there is a pre-amp that sounds good using either set of mics that would be great.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated - thanks for you time and the space.

peace,
ts

I'm no expert but I listen a lot and my ears really tend to like a nice inexpensive oade or busman modded ua5.  can't beat it for the money IMO.  you can do better, but it'll cost ya $$$

that's up to your ears obviously.  do some keyword searches over at archive and get an idea of what you like.

good idea - i feel like the guy who calls in to Mr. Obvious on that one  :-[

i have read a few say that the warm mod on the UA-5 sounds real nice w/the 480s.  need to go and check some things out i guess.

what a preamp will do for a microphones sound is VERY subjective...  One of the most transparent preamps out there is the grace which means you'll hear more of the what the microphone TRULY sounds like as opposed to others.  IMO, without experience and LOTS of critical listening, Im sure allmost any pre you run with the 480's will sound good...  Over time of course, you will find what you really like sonically and go in that direction.  Then the only choices you'll have is the features you want (a/d stage, m/s capability, gain structure etc).
