Title: Help me find an inexpensive mixer with AFL channel outputs
Post by: Gutbucket on May 04, 2015, 11:27:22 AM
Looking for a small inexpensive mixer for use as 6 independent channel strips, providing polarity invert, EQ, level control, and independent AFL outs for each channel.   The independent channel outputs is the key requirement.  2 channel stereo bus output is totally secondary.. welcome and probably unavoidable but not really needed.

Application is to provide the individual channel output control for direct multichannel playback which is missing on the Tascam DR-680 and DR-680mkii.

Some user's will recall Ozpeter having a custom monitor mixer built for the R-44 years ago.  This application is similar, but in Peter's situation the issue was overcoming the absence of 2-bus stereo panning control on the R-44.  In this case it is overcoming the absence of EQ, level and polarity control on the DR-680 direct channel outputs.

None of the small format 6 to 10 channel mixers I know of offer individual channel AFL output.  At best they only provide PFL outs via channel inserts.  Only much larger mixers seem to provide AFL channel outs.  In a perfect world this would also provide independent delay on each channel, but I know that's not reasonable.   Also nice would be master gain and EQ across all six outputs, but that's less important and also not a reasonable request.

Thanks, small rack-mount line mixers is the direction I was looking, wondering about the possibility of doing a mod such as that when I didn't see any small ones with individual channel AFL outs.

I have an ancient 6 to 2 channel Yamaha mixer laying around which came with a 4-track cassette deck I picked up used way back in the late 80's!  I might open that up and take a look at modifying it, assuming I can clean up it's dirty pots sufficiently.  I'd need to put in polarity invert switching as well, but that shouldn't be a problem.
