Umphrey's McGee Cable Comp
June 7th, 2007
Crystal Ballroom
Portland, Ore.
Thursday Night

http://eugenehifi.com/Comps/Umphrey's_6-7-07_Cable_Comp/

Source:  Neumann km 184's (pointed directly at the stacks / ~ 75 degree spread) > Sound Devices 722 @ 16 / 44.1 (limiter off / recorded with a few "0 dB" peaks)
Location:  fob against the security aisle / 9' stand / centered / ~40' from stage
Transfer:  722 > firewire > Samplitude 6.04 (tracking) > wav > flac

van den Hul sample taken from 28:06 - 33:59 in the first set.
Mil-Spec sample taken from 32:40 - 39.17 in the second set

Cables were changed at set break.  Significant attention was paid to keep a consistent stereo configuration from cable to cable.
The Mil-Spec cables were made by one of the reputable cable makers on this board.

  • I thought I heard.......
I have not listened to it yet...
but after working w/the cable, I'm interested in giving them a solid listen.
that stuff is *well built*, to say the least.

Thanks, Nick.  +T
I hope you find some time to check it out.  I think the results are consistent with the other vdH cable comps previously posted.  Got any shows coming up?  I'll send the demo cables out if you're interested in using them in the field.

Mule on 9-11.
I'd love to run a pair.

I'll have two rigs going, as long as Peluso comes through on time w/the P2.
it wont be a comp, but it will be fun to listen to them.

Excellent.  I think the cables will be in use this weekend, but I'll send them up via priority early next week.

the vdh sounds SLIGHTLY better to me
but they cost a lot more correct? they don't sound that much better to justify a large price difference (at least to my ears)

thanks for the comp

Thanks for the confirmation, Nick.  The catalog is yours.  I thought you might enjoy reading through it.

willndmb - The van den Hul's are ~$125 more than the standard mil-spec cables.  Thanks for listening & +T for commenting.

id have to debate any usefulness of this comp, KB is always tweaking the mix, i'd be shocked if the second set mix didnt sound quite a bit different than the first.

apples vs. oranges.
