Stealthable 24/96 recorders
« on: April 03, 2007, 04:09:44 AM »
I'm in the market to upgrade to a 24/96 recorder.  I've been do quite a bit of reading but it always seems like there is more.  I'm hoping someone here can posta list of all of the stealthable recorders that can record in 24/96.  (If you want to include pros/cons, that's great but not needed.)  I don't care if it is HD or flash card.  My only preferences are that it doesn't need an external power supply and/or there is no large files issues.  I'm currently using a JB3.

Thanks in advance,
Mako

The first thing that came to my mind was the M-Audio Microtrack. Search the forum for a massive amount of topics on this recorder. :)

Yeah, I've been really leaning toward that one.  My only issue with it is the power supply...  Do you have to use an external battery pack?  Are there internal batteries?

The way I've understood it, it has internal batteries, but some (most?) people are not satisfied with the battery time (2-3 hours tops I think it was) and use an external battery supply. I know there are links to such in one (or more) of the "official" Microtrack-topics.

I use the MT and never run it without an external battery...external batteries are cheap...If you wait a little longer (maybe later this month???) you can consider the cheap Zoom H2 - retail under $200!!! Down side to the Zoom H2 is there is no digital in.

I've just done some research on stealthable recorders and it seems the microtrack will need an external battery for safe recording. There are USB powerpacks for under $20 that take AA batteries, such as one I just saw at target that powers USB cellphones. As for large files, someone told me the microtrack will start a new file at 2gigs, and there WILL be about a 5 second loss between files (so not seemless). But it also tells you how much time you have left so you can plan on stopping and restarting at an opportune moment..... too much hassle for me to worry about though (I'm coming from a HiMD recorder and I don't want anything that even slightly resembles flipping discs).
