TSKB: Time Base Corrector
« on: March 22, 2010, 04:01:33 AM »
Hope someone can shed a bit of light on this...

I have a ton of old VHS tapes to transfer. I have a Samsung all in one VHS to DVD unit as well as an older Sony Hi8 Camcorder, both with built in TBC. I won't use the Samsung for any serious transfers (actually, I've never recorded on it) because of the sub-par encoding and the auto tracking 'feature'. I capture using a USB a/d box and if the auto tracking kicks in, the OSD pops up and becomes part of the ripped video.

My question is...

Would it be possible to use either the Samsung or the Sony strictly as a pass through device instead of an external (and pricey) TBC? I know that most if not all external units such as the Datavideo boxes would likely do a better job but I'm hoping to get by on the cheap. If so, should I use the Samsung or the Sony?

Or...

Should I break down and buy one of the  pro-sumer, TBC equipped JVC or Panasonic VCR's off ebay? I've found them for as little as ~$60 shipped.
