So with all this talk about the HD eventually shitting the bed. I figure it's time to get a good/deal on a 8 gb cf card to carry around. Is one better than another? I know nothing about them :-[

Tony I would go with a Sandisk. I used one in my Canon EOS Digital Rebel for a year. I can't say if it will do the same with audio but they are one of the best when it comes to Digital Cameras. Take a look at the SD webpage and see what they tell you to use in they recorders. I hope that I was a help see you at the ratdog show on sat.

With such a wide range of CF marketers (the actual Flash RAM chips come from very few vendors, however) available and with the types, speeds, and capacities continuing to evolve, there is no practical way for Sound Devices to keep up with them. Fortunately, the 7-Series recorders work well with nearly all CF type I and type II cards, including Microdrives.
If you are doing high data rates for test/measurement (>96 kHz sampling rates) we recommend the 40x or greater speed cards. These can support higher track counts and sampling rates. If you are doing typical audio rates, nearly any modern card will work well.
i have used the Transcend 8gb card a few times with no issue to patch for someone. i bought one for myself and after formatting with the 722 had issues where the card wouldn't be recognized after the recording. i believe that was just a fluke though. i have also patched in a couple different cards (want to say kingston) and haven't had issues. I think you will pretty much be ok with anything as long as it is at least 40x.

Tony, I bought and have used a RiData Pro 150x 8GB CF card and has worked great so far, only used it one show, and hopefully i never have to use the cf card over the HDD, hoping the HDD lasdts me another 3-4 years, easily replaceable HDD fix tho. anyway, these go for around 150 new/used. got mine used in mint condition for 150 FWIW
i also like being ablew to run just the CF card, bet it saves some power too, i know writing to BOTH the HDD/CF Card it def sucks some juice :)

I use a 4gb Kingston and a 4gb Sandisk in my 702.They have been great for me so far.I'll probually grab an 8gb Kingston in near future.

Yea, I've read that a few times. A pretty broad statement. I'll think I'll try an SD Ultra or Extreme. I don't want to go for the real cheap ones. So the Transcend had some issues? I was considering that one.

So a higher speed card may be a safe bet. So what happened to your HD. Was is it a heat issue? Lots of use in one day? Just wondering. I've got over 300 tracks/folders/wavs, whatever they are, opened so far. Granted some of them are empty, but not many. :) I wonder what the HD life span is?

dunno, def not a heat issue as it was midnight outside :) ive done about 60+ sets/recordings already with it and only ahd that one mishap, def think it was a 1.790 beta thing
HDD lifespan SD claims is about 3 years give or take, buy a CF card and dont worry about it til 2010 8)

oh and i think my 150x one is pretty quick, when i do a speed test it reads 4300 give or take, but im not saure if thats mbs or what ??? anyone?

i used macdaddy's 8gb transcend 2-4 times simultaneously while writing to HDD with absolutely zero problems - never formatted it, just used it straight out of the package. after having success with that I decided to buy one. i chose to format it inside the 722 - everything seemed to go fine while taping (only to CF no HDD), but after i powered off and went to restart i got a media must be formatted message. i haven't grabbed an external CF reader yet so i haven't been able to check the file yet, so its still sitting on the CF. im thinking i either powered down too quickly or got a bunk card. it seems that the better built decks (722, 702 HD-p2 etc) are capable of reading just about any card on the market.

someone reported here about a year ago that edirol reported that slower cards produced fewer write errors than fast for audio recording in the r1.

the speeds are for reading tho, i md5 all of my transfers anyway so.......

16GB SanDisk Extreme III gives be speed test of over 7000.
I have run four tracks at 24/96 without any problem :)
