Ivie Electronics Audio Analyzer and Noise Generator
« on: April 05, 2012, 02:22:03 PM »
Anyone here familiar with these Ivie Elctronics models:

IE-20B White/Pink Noise Generator

IE-30A Audio Analyzer

I just dug these out of my parents garage and am curious what the main uses are and what they are possibly worth?  I like the vintage look to them and will likely keep them if I have a use for them.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Hey nice find, here's some more info for you.  Did your dad setup or service theaters?

IE-20B White/Pink Noise Generator  http://www.ivie.com/download/IE-20B.pdf    manual here -> http://www.ivie.com/download/IE-20B_MAN.PDF

IE-30A Audio Analyzer  http://www.hps4000.com/pages/general/ivie_ie33.pdf    manual here -> http://www.ivie.com/download/IE-33&35%20Man_060110.pdf

No idea what they're worth today but it seems like they could still be useful to tune your DAW workstation's or a home theater's speaker/room response.  That IE-30A looks like an impressive little unit.

edit: oops, crossed out the wrong device link ~ thanks [notlance] for catching that and finding the right device, too bad it isn't the 33.

I own an Ivie IE-20B and an Ivie IE-10A.  The IE-10A is an octave band spectrum analyzer so I don’t use it anymore since I have 1/3 to 1/24 octave units available.  I still use the IE-20B all the time; it’s small, light and runs off batteries, and pink noise has not changed since 1980.  I took out the internal batteries because they were leaking, and added a DC power jack.  It will run off of 5 to 6 volts.

Back in the late ‘70s when the IE-30A come out it was THE SHIT.  There were not many 1/3 octave spectrum analyzers available then, much less hand-held ones.  The Ivies also had very good filters and mics.  New, the IE-30 sold for over $2000, which was some serious money then.

The biggest problem with the Ivies were the internal Ni-Cad batteries.  In less than 5 years the batteries will not hold a charge and they start to leak which can cause some serious internal damage.  Taking one of these Ivies apart (and getting it back together) is no easy task since they crammed so much stuff into the case.  The last time I checked Ivie was still in business, and it appears they still service the IE-30.  Here is a link:

http://www.ivie.com/index.php/support/customer-service

As for what they are worth, that is hard to say.  You can buy a 1/3 octave hand-held sound spectrum analyzer for about 500 bucks these days, but it does not have all those cool red LEDs like the IE-30B.

DigiGal: The link you posted for the IE-30B manual was actually for the IE-33 & IE-35 which are about, oh, 30 years newer.  This is what Cheesecadet has:

LED matrix displays rule!

Thanks for the info.  I plugged in both units and they seem to still work.  LED display comes up on the audio analyzer and power to the white/pink noise generator came on.  It also has the IE1036A mic with the system.

So anyone know what something like this might bring on eBay or something like that?  notlance possibly?  I may sell it "as is" if I can get a few bucks for it.  Is there even a market for this kind of thing anymore?

I can maybe post some pics later tonight.

I really do not know what these sell for now days, so I will not make an uneducated guess.  Like I said, you can buy a 1/3 octave RTA for about $500, but to get one as accurate as the IE-30 you’d have to pay more than that.  I’d pay up to $100 an IE-20B noise generator if I did not already own one, but I do not know what they sell for on the market.

If you don’t need to sell these right away, just keep an eye on eBay to see if you can catch an auction.  There are some “blue book” services on the net, but I don’t trust them particularly with specialized items like these.

You don’t happen to have an Ivie IE-17 also do you?

Back in the day these were state of the art. But we have come a long way since then now we have much better resolution in much smaller packages. Good luck with your sale I would say $400 - $500 would be a good price. If everything is working as it should.

The IE-30A and IE-20B on eBay just sold for $202.50 shipped.  If they work at all that seems to be a pretty good price (for the buyer).  Sure, they're old school, but I don't know what you can buy for 200 bucks that would work as well.

Software ( even free ware ) and a laptop you already own and a panasonic wa61 would give you better resolution then this does, No offence.
