Can you use a minime to do transfers?
« on: May 14, 2003, 09:51:41 AM »
I was just wondering can you use a MiniMe to do a DAT to HD transfer? I plan on running my laptop at 24/48 out of the mme using the usb. But as I don't have taper's for 3 of the 5 shows I'm doing and while alot of you guys have agreed to haul my gear in. It may be much to ask to haul that in as well. Maybe not but I got to thinking does a Mme have a digital in? Just curious mostly. I'm sure i can talk you guys into being my sherpa ;)

No it doesn't...

Technically it's possible to use it to put data into a PC but it is less desirable due to the additonal AD conversion...

Hmmm I see. I guess I'm lugging the laptop in ;D. Now I need to get a power inverter so I can charge my laptop batteries at night while camping.
Thanks

The aztek does not require the car to run. It's got seperate plugs. That car does it all ;).

It's got sep plugs or sep battery??  Unless it has a battery for the starter and another for all the other jazz I'm saying you'll need to run the car so the battery won't lose enough charge to start.

Even with run down protection on it? I am hoping to get a camp ground with AC so it won't be a major issue. But I may need someone here to provide a recharge. Or if I can find cheal hotels it will be a moot point.

Or does anyone know of any small portable generators? Quite ones that won't get me into trouble in a camp ground?

I forgot it had the rundown protection, but that brings up another issue.  I really doubt you would get that much of a charge before it shuts down.... hence you'd need the car on so it doesn't fall below the 9V.

Rob,

you're talkin kinda crazy here bro!  ;)

instead of buying a generator or some such, just pick up a couple more batteries from Batteries Plus or somewhere.  ya got time.  mouser.com has some great deals.  just get yourself enough battery power to do a three show run.  then use the power invertor to charge while driving to the next town.

otherwise, i've got some extra batteries ya could borrow.  but once you pay shipping on those, ya might as well buy yer own.  hehe...

lemme know if ya need the extras.  could give them to ya at Alpine.  you'd just havta ship 'em back.  BTW:  what ya need?  6V or 12V?

peace

I was talking with dave morrisson of micsupply.com fame, and he was telling me he uses a 12v deep cell boat battery to recharge.  He told me they run 50 bucks at costco and work just like generators.  He c harges 2 12v off of his at a time while using the others.  Anyone got some links?  I will look later when I have time, but it sounds like a dandy idea!

Dave, I'll be ok on the 12v for the mme. Just the laptop batts have me concerned.I have 2 4 hr external batteries.I switch at set break to be safe. I know of the thing that Daryan mentioned I'm going to check into that a guy here at work bought one for  a different reason. I think I can use the Car adapeter to charge the Laptop batteries. But always looking for a better way.

Rob,
If you can find that bttery that guy was using then get it. I found this at a power inverter site
"Small Inverters: Most automobile and marine batteries will provide an ample power supply for 30 to 60 minutes even when the engine is off. Actual time may vary depending on the age and condition of the battery, and the power demand being placed on it by the equipment being operated by the inverter. If you use the inverter while the engine is off, you should start the engine every hour and let it run for 10 minutes to recharge the battery."
Honestly I wouldn't try charging using the outlets while the vehicle is off.  But, again that is me  :)

Actually I have my issue solved now. Even though I'm camping at Alpine and Deer Creek I'll have power. At Alpine I'm staying at 'Bong State Recreation Area" on a site with power (and showers close by). And at DeerCreek It looks like Dead Creek, in which that owner has said he'll hook me up with power. I was only really concerned about 2nd & 3rd nights DeerCreek. I can charge on the drive to Deer Creek and cover the first show. And just for the record for 12v the Deep Cell Marine batterys will charge the 12v sla.

Glad you got it all worked out.  How much do those 12 deep cells cost? I tried looking and the best I could come up w/ was around $100.  See any cheaper??

hey all, this has sparked some interest for me as well...i'm doing 5 shows on the west coast and i need to be able to charge up in between...in all honesty, the only real problem i can foresee is at the gorge, as i will have time to charge between chula vista > shoreline and hopefully will be able to charge at shoreline before 2nd night....but to be on the safe side (and not have to buy any more batts) i'd like to figure out a way to safely charge my gear without having to worry about running the car.
i already have 4 internal laptop batts, it can handle 2 at a time so hot swapping is easy.  3 of them are extended capacity (which while recording only means about 1 hr of life!) and one normal capacity, which offers less time.
I also picked up a valence n-charge this spring, which will let me go about 3 1/2 hours solid, even with the screen open!
so, to be on the safe side, i'd like to use a power inverter to mimic the ac charge from a normal outlet....can that be run straight off a car/boat battery?  and how would i go about building this contraption?  any and all ideas are welcome.
anyone else hitting up the west coast (phish)?

I think this is our weakest link in general (power). I have a nice collection of 12v & 6v batteries (around 6 of each). When I'm archiving for an event I bring more than I typically need and man is my bag I put them in heavy. Those 7.2 AH 12v batteries tend to weight you down an awful lot. I have seen folks using motorcycle and lawnmower batteries at shows, but those weight even more. At times I wish I could rig up a nice solar inverter, but I'm not sure I could get a solar panel small enough to carry and large enough to power everything. This way during the day I could power my gear and recharge batteries. But, until I can find the right parts to do this right (and do it myself) I am like everybody else stuck lugging more weight around than any one person should to festival events.

I still haven't figured out the right number to bring with me when I go to NY in July for Gathering of the Vibes... Somebody mentioned they have power in the Taper's section. Leave it to Terrapin to think of everything for the taper!

yeah, leave it to Terrapin...

like how to make half your paying ticketholders for GOTV miss the complete first day of music (out of three) due to ONE entrance for 35,000 people, and an anal cavity search of each and every man/ woman/ child/ vehicle entering the site.  we were in line at 12:00 noon last year and at 11:00 pm we decided Kimock was done playing, so why sit in line any longer and headed back to the Motel in Schenectady.

way to go, Ken (hey, ya got ta see two great days of mucic didn't ya?) Hayes, Oxygen thief of 2002!   >:(
