looking to buy or make odd rca cable
« on: November 09, 2011, 03:39:45 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking for a cable that is male RCA stereo (red and white) and then has a female to accept RCA aswell as a second stereo input either RCA or TRS that when plugged in will override the signal from the original RCA input. Anyone have plans for how to make this cable, a link for where I can buy it, or a reference on who could make one for me? Thanks a bunch.

The overide the signal part needs clarification. Are you looking for something that will actively mute input A when input B is connected? Or, are you looking for a stereo Y cable? If you are looking for something that actively mutes, it'll be more than just a cable build. You can get RCA switchboxes that allow you to have 2-4 RCA stereo inputs and use a switch to choose which one is active.

To do autoswitching, I've found this box http://www.amazon.com/Philips-PH-61153-Automatic-Selector-Modulator/dp/B000165AOY which looks through it's inputs and stops when it finds an active signal. So second signal goes into input 1, and original signal goes into 2. If no signal on input 1 it scans and checks input 2 for a signal. Not sure how difficult the build would be on a custom version of this.

I'm the webmaster for a small audio company that does custom builds as well as amps and effects pedals. www.greedtone.com. I've sent your idea to our engineer/owner to get his input.

travelin,

It's hard to tell from your OP exactly what you want, but if you want to disconect the signal coming in from a pair of female RCAs when you plug into an additional female 1/4" TRS input, what you could use is a normalling jack.   Here's a link to a Neutrik vertical mount normalling jack http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Neutrik/NJ5FD-V/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMv0W4pxf2HiVy2l1tTxTkO1d3Lz6zl1pms%3d  It is not exactly cable friendly since it is made for PCB mounting but someone skilled in making cables could make it work nicely for you.  Attached is a schematic of how the cable would go together.  When you insert a TRS plug into the jack, it opens the connections coming from the female RCAs.  I'm guessing that the RCA male ends are the outputs.  Hope this helps.
