I think I understand the pip powering scheme now, at least for 2-wire mics it makes sense.
Digging back in to my ke4 capsules, they work but I'm not sure why they work...
These are 3-wire capsules but I wired them according to the first schematic here...

Can you wire any 3-wire pip mic in either configuration?
the second epanorama schematic is the same as is recommended in the data sheet here

Aside from phase is there any performance loss from using the first configuration with a 3-wire?

Almost there...
I can crack these open and rewire them.
In the first schem the fet source is grounded though, then you said you don't want to ground it?
