Title: Small windscreens (thin) to AKG CK61
Post by: Jonas Karlsson on February 08, 2015, 03:47:17 PM
Hello!

Festival season is building up - and I'm planning my summer adventures!

I'm low key, and only stealth. Using my current setup I can't really fit the windscreens that came with the AKG CK61's.

Do you have any tips where I can get my hands on thinner options, that really just measure 3-5 mm all around the caps? Or is it better to NOT use windscreens at all? I've done a few shows without screens and the wind can't really be heard at all, just the sound from the PA that won't really reach the caps. Would like to be sure no wind gets recorded.

ANyone needs specific setup - PM.

Thanks!

/Jonas, Sweden

Also, ebay has a million very small diameter screens as well ;) Very cheap too!

Outdoors, you should use screens whether it's windy or not imho. Dust etc. is hard to clean out of a mic.

IMO, screens should be worn whether you're indoors or outdoors :)

although this option is thicker than 5mm...the Audio Technica Windscreen for the 4051 is rather slim as I recall....and fits the CK61 diameter...

Thanks for the input - I will look into this asap :)

Is this the actual B1?

The Schoeps B1 is actually not really a windscreen, is it? More a protection to put over the capsules when they´re not in use.

Does it work well as a windscreen?

I don't know honestly! I've NEVER seen a Schoeps taper [or any taper] use those B1 screens and they look like they wont off much protection! I always liked the AKG screens that are low profile and have that slit halfway down the screen! That is what I would get if I were you! They came with my 481's when I bought them new in 1999 and my ck63s when I bought them new in 2003 or 2004! Anyone know the actual part number for those?

I did get windscreens to my CK61/63's but I won't fit them with my current setup, it's low key...

Then give those B1s a shot! They're definitely better than nothing and look super lo pro ;)

They should resist 18km/h (5m/s) wind - not much, but as a protection to dust etc at a festival it should be enough ;)

I'll let you know when I get them, and try them.

I have several pairs of B1s. I use them for indoor shows only but I always use them if I'm indoors. I don't think they affect the sound much if at all. I believe they are designed to keep resin off the caps when close micing stringed instruments. For schoeps outdoors I think the B5Ds are pretty good, but they won't fit the AKGs. For those I would go with DPA or Shure, but neither are good for very low profile/stealth stuff.

Just ordered 2 B1's from a Schoeps seller/store in Sweden. $6 a piece, instead of $13 as on the sites I found when using google (US-stores).

Will let you know the result as soon as the outdoor-season starts :)

I used to use AT8159's when I had my actives... and will likely go back to those unless somebody else can offer a better, equally inexpensive option.

From Schoeps' Web site: "The B 1 ... is especially suitable for protecting a capsule from rosin dust when attached to a string instrument (e.g. with the VA 1 violin mount) and as a hygiene protection."

The "B" in its product designation stands for "Besprechungsschutz" ("Schutz" = protection, "Besprechung" = being spoken into / at). Schoeps' actual windscreens all have product names starting with "W" ("Windschutz").

Is it better than nothing when there's wind or air conditioning? Yes, but not by much; you're playing the odds that there will be only very minimal, gentle air currents, just at the margin of what the microphone's built-in screening could have handled anyway. Also, a "Besprechungsschutz" generally is designed to protect the capsule from moving air that strikes it more or less on-axis. Wind currents don't respect that assumption, though.

--best regards

For my purposes the B1's have been successful if you ask me. I have, however, not been using them on a stormy show - but the big problem is really not getting the wind in the microphones itself - but the sound from the PA will be the big problem... really nothing you can do about that anyway...
