use ground lift on NT222DC (Schoeps tubes)?
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:24:35 PM »
It was mentioned in Focker's thread on his continuing problems with the ST350 and 744T that the ground lift needs to be used when powering two NT222s off the same battery. I have used headphones to see whether I can hear any difference in background noise level with my NT222s on the same SLA with ground lift on or off and have never heard any noise either way, so I was wondering whether anyone has had a contrary experience, either by actually hearing noise or seeing increased noise level in a wav file? It occurs to me that I have not done the latter test, and probably should. Thanks.

That was me that mentioned that in Fockers thread. I was advised to run it when I ran the tubes for some shows. Got this from the Elvo site...

GROUND LIFT:

When using the same accumulator for several units (for example two NT 222 DC
for stereo recording), ground loops may cause hum or other noise. In such case
you can insulate the switching power supply ground from the analog ground by
switching on the GROUND LIFT. One unit's ground always should stay connected
to the accumulator.

CAUTION: Inappropriate use may cause hum or other noise. If in doubt, always
choose the OFF position (i.e. yellow LED "GROUND LIFT" is off).

I don't know just where I'm going
But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can
