Oktava Caps on eBay via Recording Services
« on: December 21, 2003, 01:28:29 AM »
Just curious if anyone here has purchased "matched caps" through this eBay retailer or knows how they match caps exactly.

I sent an e-mail but seeing if there are any TS.com happy customers!

Thanks in advance,
Nick

if you bought them for that company id say you're getting ripped off.  I think the price is about $64 a cap.

~$99 for a matched pair of card caps, something like $140 or $160 for omni's (why I don't know)..

If you were to buy matched pairs Al where would you recommend?

Ya, sound-room is my "backup".. I'm curious if I can save ~$90 ($64 a cap + $60 for matching thru SR) buy purchasing on eBay through this d00d..

Stay away from that recording services guy. He has good products, and positive feedback, but he waaay over charges for shipping. He has ridiculous flat fee's for shipping  on everything. He sent me a small wooden Schoeps box and charged me $16 to do so saying it was for packaging and shipping. Turns out he sent it in a box that had been used four or five times before, was falling apart by the time it reached me, and the UPS sticker said it cost him $4.55 to ship.... RIPOFF!

Hey Nick:
I bought my Oktava MC012 microphones through: Michael Vladimirsky, rtt@ecc.crimea.ua
He is indeed in Russia and doing business with him was difficult because of that. He's a great guy, but it costs a lot to get the funds to him in Russia. It was only worth it for me, because I got all the capsules at the same time. It was a while ago, but I think I saved about $100 over getting them from Taylor at the Sound Room. I have heard good reports about that eBay guy. I remember someone telling me they bought capsules from him, had a problem with the matching, and the guy took the capsules back and send a replacement pair.

FWIW, I bought my MK012's from Ken at Recording Services through eBay and was nothing but happy with both the products and service I received.  When I first discovered his Oktava auctions, I emailed him about whether he sold true matched pairs, how he tested them, etc.  He actually called me at work one day and we talked for 20 minutes about his procedures, his background, his studio, etc...I learned a lot from him in that short period of time, he knows his stuff.  I also bought an aluminum flight case which is real sweet for about $45.00.

Hmm, I wasn't overcharged for shipping so I'm not sure what happened with Jason?

Anyway, that's what happened with me, just thought I'd throw it out there...

peace,
Keith

Keith can you detail his response to matching, testing, etc?

Does he provide documentation with the matched pairs?

Basically everything he does to determine matched pairs is what Taylor from Sound Room does, i.e. he takes them into his studio and tests them by hand, first individually, then in pairs.  He didn't send me a frequency response analysis, but I didn't ask for one either so it might be available.  And he guarantees what he sells.

Jason: I just checked my records.  Yeah, I guess he does charge a little bit much for shipping...I got my mics and flight box shipped to me for $20.00.  I guess at the time I didn't think much of it as I figured I was saving some bucks to begin with by getting a matched pair from Ken vs. Sound Room.  I guess the savings on the mics outweighed the shipping costs so I went for it.

BTW, here's a link to his studio, Trilogy Productions.  As you can tell the guy has been in business for a while and at least appears to know what he's doing.   http://www.trilogyproductions.com/about.htm.

peace,
Keith

I have been looking at the hypers from this guy. The price is much better then the soundrooms. The shiping is a little steep but I bet the soundroom shiping would only be 1/2. So you end up spending $5-$10 more on shiping but the over all cost is less

i cant really say anything about his testing techniques, but Ken is a great businessman.  bought my mk012's from him.  the guy actually called me twice regarding the purchase and shipping arrangements(even left a message on my voicemail)  cant remember what i paid for shipping although i think i got a better deal than advertised since i used "buy it now".  at any rate i'm not going to cry over being overchaged $10 for shipping....whatever, 90% of the people on ebay overcharge shipping anyway. kind of expected i guess

overall great customer service and i'd definitely recommend buying from him

i bought matched caps from ken as well and was very pleased with the product and the service - ken emailed me twice to make sure that i was happy with my purchase and answered any questions i had.  i don't remember paying such inflated shipping but the overall savings were well worth paying a little more for shipping.
