Windows XP as a music server ???
« on: April 06, 2014, 04:24:08 PM »
So, I've been using an old Windows XP machine as my music server. I recently switched from WinAmp to FooBar for my playback software. But, now Microsoft is not going to support XP anymore. What does that mean for me?
Can I still use XP and FooBar? I really like this set-up.

I tried to install Ubuntu for a dual boot machine, but I ran into problems regarding my graphics card. Ubuntu couldn't deal with my HP integrated graphics card and would not boot.

I don't need to access the internet with this machine, but it is networked with a Win 7 laptop and Vista desktop.

Yes, you can still use XP and FooBar. Just because MS is no longer going to supply updates for XP doesn't mean it will quit working on April 8th or whatever the end of support date is. If it never goes online then you shouldn't worry about anything bad happening to it (virii, spyware, malware, trojans, etc.) but since it is part of a network continue practicing safe computing and keep your other systems updated and you shouldn't have any worries.

Think of it as analogous to an old car. Even though the manufacturer may no longer make parts for it (used to be a 10 year minimum window when parts from the OM were available) that didn't mean it would magically quit running the day the manufacturer quit making parts. As long as it runs and does what you want it to there is no reason to quit using the XP box or to quit driving your old car.

For XP just make sure the user account that is running is NOT an Admin account and you run some anti-virus software and you should be safe.

Has anyone tried Plex Media Server?

https://plex.tv/downloads

I'm with Chuck. I have an old computer I had lying around. Picked up a snazzy Media Server case for it and want to use it to stream movies and music.

Haven't had a chance to put it together, but hoping to soon. Just need to wait for the next rainy or lazy day.

I found this low footprint customizable music player called MusicBee

http://getmusicbee.com/

So far, it's way easier to set-up than FooBar2000.

There'a a portable version too.

i put ubunt-lite (( http://lubuntu.net/   )) on an ancient vaio with 1gig of memory and a c-rappy graphics card and it works well.  not great for internet browsing, but it does everything else.
