Festival power air travel/recharging ?
« on: March 06, 2015, 12:21:50 AM »
I am curious if anyone can give me some advice on traveling with Li batteries (I have Tekkeons and SLA's) on a plane. I believe the FAA rules state you can only bring 100 wh worth of Li batteries on a plane. Anyone know the best way to travel with enough power? I'm thinking about going to Phish's Fest X if it is announced (all signs say it is a go) and want to try to figure out how to have enough juice for the weekend or be able to recharge while on site for the next day's performance. Going off of Superball IX it looks like it would be 8 sets or so over 3 days. Any help is appreciated. I haven't really flown with a full rig for a long time.
TIA!
Coby

Ahh, Thank you for that. I obviously misread it before. All batteries rated "UP TO" 100 Wh can be carried on. I thought it was 100 total. Awesome, I think the Tekkeons are only 58 wh each iirc. So I can bring as many as I need.

de nada. A friend of mine works for American Air and told me that the TSA will open your checked bag if they see a battery, so carry-on and expecting a search is the safe bet. They'll see cylinders and wires too so it's just better to be present while they're looking. You can also request a prescreen at some airports.

I have always had luck recharging at vendor tents at festivals.  I don't think I've ever been turned down if they had an open plug.  A few times I've also plugged into the power feeding the ATMs, but I feel more comfortable leaving it in a vendor tent.
