My wife uses the Canon EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens and we're real happy with it as an all around lens.  The colors and clarity are an obvious step up over the lower end kit lenses that Canon has.  It's not in the "excellent" category, but you'll pay over twice as much (over 1K) for any of the lenses in Canon's "L" series.  Check fredmiranda.com and ebay for good used deals.  I bought ours from a forum member.

I'm a big fan of Sigma's 15-50/2.8 It has nice color, is fast and runs around $400.

Elwood: What?
Jake: This car. This stupid car. Where's the Cadillac? The Caddy? Where's the Caddy?
Elwood: The what?
Jake: The Cadillac we used to have. The Blues Mobile!
Elwood: I traded it.
Jake: You traded the Blues Mobile for this?
Elwood: No. For a microphone.
Jake: A microphone? Okay I can see that.

Nice, i really appreciate the advice.

I just dont know that much about photo and looking for a " general lens" for kinda all-purpose.  I have wide angle and telephoto L series canon and i just wanted to know what everyone thought a good standard lens would be.

thx

28-135 is . Not a bad lens, but not the best one: a bit long at its shorter end to be considered a wide. Old type IS, not really bright, it's a consumer film lens, not the best for digital. Sold it after a few months. Surely not excellent.

Canon 17-55 2.8 IS is a hidden "L" quality wide to standard. Almost as good as Canon 24-70 2.8 L. First one is perfect for low light scenes, a bit too short to be considered as a "one lens is enough to go with". 24-70 is a lot heavier and feels like a tank.
24-70 has warmer colors, lacks IS and it's quite heavy.

Bought and kept both a 17-55 and a 24-70 (bought also a second body for my girlfriend, so we can share lenses). Can't decide which is the best. So if your request is for a "excellent standard lens, IS UM EF, EF-S in the canon family" well... head or cross?

24-105 is good, but not excellent (tested but bought the 24-70)

it would help to know what lenses you already have and how much you're willing to spend. I hear good things about the 17-55 as well, although the build quality is lacking.

Lenses I use

1. 70-200 L IS f2.8

2. EF 16-35mm f /2.8 ll USM

so i am looking for a kinda " standard lens" that fits the middle

please advise

In that case, might as well check out the 24-70. (aka: the brick). Excellent build quality, super sharp. Unless of course you'd like to enter the world of "primes". Either way, you've got a great set of lenses. Once you go "L", hard to stay away.
