Advantages of xy?
« on: March 31, 2004, 03:22:28 PM »
I'm hitting STS9 tonight at the Quest in Minneapolis and am thinking of running my 463's in an xy pattern for something different. I should be able to set up about 15' in front of the stage and about 9' high. I typically run pointed at the outside edges of the stacks with very good results. What are the advantages/disadvantages of xy?

Thanks!!  :)

If you are running only 15' DFC, then XY is the optimal configuration to run IMHO.

Strengths: Image depth, accurate soundstaging, produces best tapes in less than optimal conditions.

Weaknesses: Can produce a "mono" sounding tape, but should not be an issue at 15'; can reduce the amount of bass present in the recording but this may be of benefit if you are running so close to the PA.

x/y would sound nice that close, but maybe increase the angle to like 100 or 110

Thanks guys. +T to both. I ran XY from about 25' with very good results. STS9 has a ton of bass and I think this pattern really helped absorb some of it so it isn't on my tapes.

Hey Rick.... +T for letting me use your UA-5! It worked like a charm -- very easy to set-up. I sent you a PM from my Yahoo account.
