Are flash drives good for archiving?

I'm trying to arrange and store old photos etc... An 8GB flash drive can hold a lot of my photos. Are they considered safe for archiving?

nothing is safe without more than one copy
for pictures I like to have them online somewhere as a "backup to my backups".
that said I've never had a flash drive go bad but like anything they can.

Probably the biggest danger with flash drives is losing them (they are so small). I would definitely make another copy as well.
