XLR into the soundboard
« on: September 28, 2007, 02:30:31 PM »
Howdy!  I'm looking to buy some XLR cables to run into the soundboard for taping. I take it I would need male XLR to run into the soundboard but after looking at male XLR I wonder if I would need female instead?  The female's seem to be the pair with a clip for inserting or removing from the board.  Could someone please clarify this rookie question?  Thanks.

Make sure phantom power is OFF if plugging the other end into a recorder that has mic pres and phantom on it's XLR inputs.  If it's an older SBD, ask the engineer if it is pin2 or pin3 hot.  Some older SBDs are pin3, in which case the phase of the signal will be inverted vs. the pin2 hot XLR inputs of a recorder.

you are running OUT of the soundboard, not INTO it.
you need a standard mic cable, plug the female out of the board and the male into your recorder.

This has worked out rather well for me, just make sure you get the six foot cable.
