Taping for Band...
« on: March 12, 2007, 03:17:24 PM »
Hey everyone!

I just discovered this board today, and it's amazing.  So much good info!!  I was hoping you experts could lend a little advice:

This summer I may tour with a band and create video clips for each show (live performance, interview, fan interaction, etc...)

I'm very new to this video stuff, but here's what I'm considering:

Camera - mini dv or hdd?  I think minidv would be a hassle b/c it only holds 1 hour of footage and it takes longer to transfter to laptop.  I know I need an external mic and headphone jacks, and something that does well in low lighting.  Any affordable recommendations (under $1k).

External mic - is this what most people use to capture good sound?  does the mic attach to the camera (i.e. how do you use it?)?

Software - will adobe premiere get the entire job done?

As you can see, this is all new to me, so whatever advice you can provide would be great.  Thanks!!!

1.  mini-dv sounds like a better. long tour, lots of hd space.  drop the hd and you lose it all.  mini-dv will give you better quality also.

2. either that or/and or get a feed from the board.  and we aren't bootleggers.

3. it will.

There are 80min miniDV tapes available (and in LP mode, it's 2 hrs), so there need not be a one-hour limit.  You might have to buy them online, as they're a little difficult to find in brick and mortar stores, at least in my experience.

as for low light...
you have the bands permission, which means you could get right up front or even on the side of the stage
there would be more then enough light there
the only time you would really need to worry about low light is back by the board, and even there lots of venues it still has good enough light in most cases
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

looks sexy ;D

I don't know all that much about camcorders (though I did video some Wilco with our Mini-DV cam)...but that looks like it will suffice, yes :)
