CA-14 Cards/Omnis vs CA-11 Cards/Omnis (and their Mounts)
« on: September 05, 2015, 12:47:18 AM »
So I am purchasing some CA mics from Church's Audio and had a couple questions regarding the CA-14s specifically.

I am under the impression the CA-14 cards would be better for live indoor shows, but am uncertain.

I see that these mics can come with clips or no clips.  Do these mics work with a mic bar setup?  If so, which ones?  I assume I want the clips, but don't know.

I plan on getting the CA-9200 pre-amp as well.  What would be a good setup for CA-14 cards with this preamp? (as in the recorder)  I currently own a Tascam DR-60D.

Thanks for all the help!!

That Tascam is a bit unconvenient if you're going to stealth tape. If you want a smaller recorder that goes along nicely with those mics and the preamp, you might try the Sony PCM-M10 (more expensive but highly regarded around here), a Roland R-05, a Tascam DR-07... Options are almost countless. Try to specify what you need and want and we'll be able to give more precise advice ;)

If I'm not recording stealth, can I mount them to a mic bar on a mic stand for a live show?  What kindof mic bar would I use?  If I go with the clips, I could just clip them onto an existing mic bar?

Also, I know very little about stealth recording in the first place.  Most shows I record allow taping.

Yes, there are several mounting/clamping solutions for the CA mics out there. The search function might throw you around 100 results or more ;D I'm a stealth-only taper so I can't help you any further I'm afraid! Good luck.

Itgoestoeleven makes killer cross bars for non clipped CA mic's, I own 2 NOS & DIN and normally run NOS.......thank me later for this bar + a Shure shockmount.

The alligator clips make getting them on a bar pretty inconvenient

The Itgoestoeleven bars are killer,  but you need to have no clips.  I would suggests getting the cards without clips so you can use them with the bar in an open situation. Rely on the omnis for  >:D applications as your head helps produce the stereo image.  And if you tape open with the omnis the orientation of the mics is less important to the stereo image, which make mounting them easier.  Just use a wood dowel, some have had good luck with "rabbit ear" tv antennas mounted to a stand.

Either of these are great little mics for open and  >:D   I have had good luck running 4 channels into a DR2d,  one set through the 9200, and the other using the plug in power from the recorder.  When mixed together the two "flavors" sum to a greater than the parts.

Thank you so so much!!  This is very useful information for me.  I have a better idea of what I want to do now.  I definitely want to use the omnis for good practice and to try out  >:D

Any cheaper suggestions for a recorder for the omnis for  >:D situations?

The DR2d is out of production but has the benefit of being small and 4 channel. If you find a used one make sure the external power hasn't been blown out.  It appears that if you put more than 5 volts into the external power port it blows some shit up.

That being said the M-10 is the go to around these parts, but there are many small recorder options.  Many go through the yard sale.

Thanks for the feedback.  What's the cheapest "stealth" recorder I can go with?

Also, considering pairing this with a phone or tablet for live streaming..

I am another happy Sony PCM-M10 user.

However, the Tascam DR-05 is under $100 plus the cost of a microSD card. (You'll probably want something bigger than the supplied 2GB.)

http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-DR-05-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B004OU2IQG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442102139&sr=8-1&keywords=tascam+dr-05

There's also the new Tascam DR-22WL with wireless remote control for about $105. People here are just trying them out.

Also, it depends how stealthy you need to be. Those are obviously microphones sticking out of the top of the Tascams. The PCM-M10's mics are recessed and at a glance the thing looks like a point-and-shoot camera. Of course, if someone is really examining the Sony, it does say PCM Recorder....

Yeah, the M10 isn't even close to your cheapest option. I'm a very happy Tascam user. Had the DR-05 for three or four years now and never had a problem
