Title: Recommend a mod for my Oade UA-5
Post by: Twenty8 on April 01, 2019, 03:54:52 PM
Just purchased in YS.  This unit currently has the Presence MOD.
Contacted D. Oade and he is willing to do additional mods.
One thing for sure is that the unit will get the Plus MOD.
He also relayed that he is willing to do one of three other mods for a small additional fee:
Warm
Concert
ACM (Advanced Concert MOD (?) which replaced Presence MOD)

This unit will be used mainly in larger venues, but could occasionally be put to use in smaller venues.
My first mics (as I am nearly ready to begin taping, still working long Union hours out of state) are AT3031, Sennheiser e614, Line Audio CM3 and OM1 > Tascam DR-680mkII.  UA-5 is for the DIG IN of the 680mkII.

Which mod do you think would make the most sense for larger/medium sized venues?
Yes, I know its my OWN preference, but to YOUR ears in tapes from larger arenas... which do you prefer/have preferred to hear?

I've never heard an ACM UA5...  but it's probably great.
I've ran a W+mod UA5..  sounded good. .  but also was too thick in the low end sometimes for my ears...  but it was smooth!

If he still offers it, the T+mod (transparent) has always sounded great IMO.
....but yes...  go with the + if possible.

Going with ACM.
The similarity to the Presence MOD got me.
The Plus MOD was the main thing that got it sent to Doug, but at only a small additional fee I figured an upgrade was in order when he opened up the unit.

I found a page on his website that mentioned still doing the Plus MOD for the UA-5.  After reading here that this particular mod made the unit shine, I contacted Doug.
I was really pleased when he offered a few other upgrades.
Someday, down the line, I would be interested in an additional unit with the Warm MOD.  However, I am just getting my feet wet in this hobby.
Can't wait until I am not working so much that I can actually get out and use my gear.
The time will come and I will be ready.

I've known Doug almost 30 years. The best time to send him gear is as soon as he says yes. Sometimes the hours at the bench get to be too much for him. That being said, I'm also a fan of running gear quite a bit before modding it. You just might be happy without it.
