I power all my portable equipment via Hirose 4 pin connectors like the one found in the Sound Devices recorders. Only the V3
was powered by a simple connector that could cause connection problems and wasn't compatible to the rest of my stuff. So I had a technician modified my V3 with a Hirose 4 pin.
Michael Grace was of tremendous help beforehand. I cannot say enough positive about this company (Grace Design). Fantastic sound, great handling
and first class support. Thank you. (no affiliation, just a very satisfied Grace Design owner)
The back of the V3 looks now like that:

Nice!  Which pins did you use for - and +?

The 12 VDC Hirose 4-pin convention is:
1 – ground
2 – not connected
3 – not connected
4 – DC (+)
Not sure if this might vary though for a 6 VDC application like I've seen with 4-pin XLR's

BTW: Very sweet mod and it's fabulous that Michael was a big help for you in this.  Their service can be summed up in just one word GRACEFUL !!!

Here is a little follow up. For battery powering my other stuff beside the 744T I use devices from Hawkwoods to use the same batteries like for the Sound Devices to simplify the setup.
It's this device from Hawkwoods: http://www.hawkwoods.com/products/details/details.php?code=dv-sqnr&mainMenuItemToSlide=4&asi=dv-f970&asi2=dv-mc2
Mine looks a bit different but anyway ... here it is with the V3 (don't ask me how long it powers the V3, I have no clue yet):

Right - usually 2-3 are used for charging (at least on the SD 7xx series)

I used to use a Sony DK-415 Dummy Battery Cell to power my old v2/v3/722 for MANY HOURS at a time for festies :)
