STS9 stagelip??
« on: October 08, 2009, 03:11:32 PM »
Anyone ever tape STS9 from the stage lip before?  If so, how'd it turn out?  If not, what do y'all think?

There are no vocals, but I'm not sure about the keyboards and effects goin on....  if they get fed straight to the PA system or if stage lip mics would pick em up fine.

Thanks!

There are some old stagelip recordings on the archive, but I don't think they would allow it now, plus as you said there is a lot of direct input / non amplified instruments.

A few years back we taped an opening band for STS9 stagelip (@ Roxy in Boston), but the band manager / security moved us back before STS9 came on.
Mics: AKG C 414 B-XL II/ST, Nevaton MCE 400
Other: M148, AD-500e, AD-1000, ACM PMD 660, R09-HR, JB3

This is not a band that I would think stagelip would be a good idea for.  Actually, I probably wouldn't recommend taping them at all.  ;)

Thanks for the info ingsy....  I figured that it probably wouldn't sound proper, but didn't know that they don't like rigs in their face.   :P

I wouldn't expect a Pens fan to be hip enough for the Sound Tribe....  eh Heath  ;) ;)

actually, sts9 used to be VERY cool with this. i taped numerous shows in the 99>2002 era with onstage mics with fantastic results. this was when they were using regular wedge monitors, and no laptops or other fancy electronics.
they were funkier then too - hunter played his guitar more, now he likes to play computer games on his laptop for a crowd ;)

no but in all seriousness, not only do they have a lot of instruments now which are midi or go line out to the sbd/PA, but they also use in-ear-monitors now, which makes the stage mix very different than that of a stage mix with real monitors.

so even if they'd let you, you wouldn't make the best recording. alas, they won't let you anyway so i wouldn't bother trying. just get up in the sweet FOB/DFC spot and pull a recording

best of luck!

there would be almost no, or perhaps even none, sound to capture at stage lip; they use in-ear monitors and all of the sound now goes through the PA system, so run from the cage at the soundboard, ask Ryan the FOH for permission nicely and he will immediately agree, you can drop my name or Todd Edgerton's if it helps, I just did this on Saturday for their show in Indianapolis

Ended up in the OTS.  My local venue set up a section, elevated right behind the SBD....   best spot in the venue for a crowded show!  Still kinda chatty though.  Talked to Ryan for a moment....  he rocked the sound!!!  He's running a pair of MKH 8040's I think for their immediate matrix CD's for sale.  Cool dude!

Yep, I chatted w/ him briefly at the Stubb's show about his 8040's and Korg MR-1000.  And to second what others have said, asked a few years back about running stage-lip and they had just switched to IEMs and he said it wouldn't sound good at all.
