I'm thinking it might be easiest to use an "all-in-one" recorder like the Edirol R9 or Zoom H4...
Any possibility someone else might be recording this artist?
No, I don't think anyone will be recording this artist. Between the 2 that you listed above, which one would you recommend? And are they small enough to fit into a purse? Also, is it easy to download the music from them onto a computer or a CD?
I'm a newbie, too, but here's what I know:
I just got a Edirol R-09 which someone mentioned. It is literally exactly the same size as a cassette tape, or a cigarette pack. (Just a bit thicker, though) It has two built-in mics which are really pretty good. I just bought a cellphone case that fits it exactly, and has a leather flap that closes it with velcro, and the two little speakers stick out the side slightly. And the case has a belt clip. You'd want to some how cover the mics if it was going to be searched, then uncover them before you record (!)
If its like a bar or dinner theater, you could literally set it on the table in front of you in the case I described, with the mics pointing forward and get a decent recording.
In response to your other question, it uses SD (secure digital) flash cards. (postage stamp sized memory chips) Buy a 2 gig card to start from any PC or office supply store for like 30 dollars, it will record several hours of better than CD quality! And it comes with a USB cable, so if you plug it into a PC, it shows up as a 'drive' so you can just drag and drop your files onto your hard drive with zero effort. Or you can buy a USB 'reader' that has slots for the flash card you plug in. Simple.
The Zoom H4, is pretty similar. Its a little bigger, but has the unfortunate side effect of looking very much like a TASER! the mics are mounted on the top, pointin at an angle, with metal wire cage protecting it. So if you are a woman (I think you said) you have a choice between pretending to have a cellphone or a taser :-)
I paid $328 US for my R-09 new on ebay, they list for $399. The Zoom H4 street price is $299, I think the electronics in the R-09 are more professional. Either one could be bought with Buy It Now on ebay and shipped overnight, or all of the music supply stores (musiciansfriend, sam ash, sweetwater, etc, and even amazon .com have them readily available. You might even find them in an office supply store with the 'digital voice recorders'
Good luck!
