M210's or M294's
« on: March 31, 2006, 09:09:12 AM »
So I'm finally ready to join Team Gefell. What would be the general consensus among the group as to which model would be preferable? I like the sound of each, and I know the M200 series gives you the flexability of interchangable caps, but is there any feedback anyone could give me as to actually using them in the field, any plus/minuses as to using them various venue configurations, indoor/outdoors and excetera. Thanks alot for any info anyone might have to add.

I don't know of any tapers using the m294's, so I don't think you'll get much feedback on those.  although I could be mistaken, so it certainly doesn't hurt to ask.  I will put in a good word for the 210's though.  I don't own them, but I have borrowed and run them once.  I was at the Orhpeum Theater in Boston, under the balcony, all the way in the back, and far left.  if you looked at the venue, and thought, "now, where would be the absolute worst place to record from", that's where I was.  So given all that, I was pleasantly surprised with the recording I made (m210 > V3).  it certainly isn't near my all-time great recordings, but given the circumstances, I thought it would turn out much worse (and had I not borrowed the hyper caps and run my cards, I'm sure it would have been a lot worse).  so that's a big plus for the 210's, I'd say.

i have done som recordings with the m294's back in 2003-2004, i consider them much better than the m210 in terms of tranperancy and  finer details. don't get fooled by the bass cut on the frequency plot, these nickel capsules are solid down there. I think watthead has some of the recordings...

M294/295 sound fantastic on some sources but due to nickel diaphragms, they are pretty bright. Muj is right, no lack of bass, but overall, a bright microphone. I love them on acoustic guitar and Double Bass, cello, any strings really. Not the best choice for PA taping.   M200s or M300s would be my first choice for PA tapes.

I would also highly reccomend the MV692 bodies, which can utilize different caps. They werent origianlly designed for 48v phantom, but they are easily modified to overcome this. the mic's were originally delivered with either m58(omni) or m62(card) capsules, mounted on the head of the impedance converter (mic amp) by three little screws. the head is not compatible with other sd/ld capsules from gefell, because it lacks the necessary thread. However, a threaded head is availeable from gefell, . They can use all the other capsules from the old gefell SMS modular range:
m93, m70, m94 (SD omni / cardoid / cardoid)
m71, um70 (LD cardioid / switchable omni,cardioid,fig.8 -) Just get those bodies and the threaded head adapter....Sexy mics. My next purchase as far as mics go.

Oh yeah, I get a great discount with MG, PM me.  ;)

Thanks for your great input Teddy. I'm torn between the M200's (card & omni) or the um70's. Right now I can go as high as 3.5 to 4k so if it's not too much trouble could i get a quote for both? Thanks alot man, your a GREAT guy for doing this.
