Rockbox for Edirol R-09 anyone?
« on: August 10, 2007, 09:33:36 AM »
Hi guys!
Has anyone considered if it would be possible to get a port of Rockbox going for Edirol R-09?

Pictures of the inside of the unit has been published:
http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,65175.msg906758.html#msg906758

Has anyone got the facts about what's on those boards?
What processor etc.?

Here's some info on what needs to be done:
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/NewPort
And a forum:
http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?board=16.0

One of the first things to do would be to identify the circuits inside the unit...

seems it uses a Texas Instruments TM320 family processor+DSP. The problem is that TI is not very friendly to opensource, waving with NDA's.... So it would need quite a bit of reverse engineering.

The base rule of Rockbox development is that a port happens when one or more capable people have one and start hacking it.

What would be the advantage?
DPA 4021 >SD MP-2>Sony PCM M10

Church Audio Cardoids>Edirol R-09

you guys must not have a rockbox device.  Sure the r-09 does what you want it too.  But the rockbox could create endless possibilities and recording options and features.
The micro-track could really use some rockbox action.

rockbox rules!

automatic lowering(and never raising) recording levels ;) when clipping might occur.
l+r gain can be set seperately(great when you have unmatched mics like my DPA 4061 which hab 4db difference)

again, Like what?  I am curious.  From my understanding the R9 already does seemless splits, you can already adjust recording levels, it has good meters, it already records in 24/48wav.  what more do you need?  the only thing I wish the R9 had was a digital input.  Rockbox can't fix that.

ok theres one......How noticable is this in the recording?  does it just lower the volume or does it act like a soft limit?

it just lowers levels as we do by hand when we realize levels were set too high.

Yeah except, with the automatic lowering you might get 1 loud clap that will cause your whole show to be recorded with ridiculously low levels.  I think that once you get used to your rig this feature is useless.

not true.  you can set the amount of time of clipping before the safety gain works.

Still, I'd rather set levels myself.  Usually when I run a show I can guess the correct level to within 3 notches on my R-09.  Once you get used to your rig, this feature loses value.

This feature takes the guess work out of it.  It really makes "set it and forget it" possible..

Some shows I go to, while being the same band, can have big differences in spl. I mostly manage to dump my gear somewhere before the show starts... AGC-safety makes my life easy :)
