Countryman B3 for loud shows
« on: February 19, 2019, 12:13:52 PM »
òla together !

I have my hands on 2 Countryman B3 mics which I like to use in loud, amplified rock concert situations.
the modell is called: Countryman Isomax B3 Lavalier,  Omnidirectional
Typ: B3W 4FF 05 BSL
with TA4 Female for Shure plug

is this the right microphone for my needs or do I need a different one.
I am a bit uncertain because Countryman offers some 'different versions' of the B3.

Also do I need to get these little bastards modded, ... my rig would be M10 + 12V bbox + 2x B3's

further more if the modd is necessary what's the right resistor  2,2 or 4,7 k ... hm

Any help is appreciate - THANKS !

i had some b3s that did not do too well with loud volumes. but i was using a funky power supply so i could go line in into a dat. i would recommend dpa4061s. those can handle any levels.

You'll need the 4.7k mod to use the B3's for loud shows.
Mics : Sony ECM-717, MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod), SP-CMC-4 (at853), 2x DPA4060, 2x DPA4061
Battery box : SP-SPSB-6524 w/bass roll-off filter, MM-CBM-1
Preamp : Church Audio CA-9100
Recorders : Sony MZR-700PC, Edirol R-09HR, Tascam DR-2d

Fwiw, my b3’s when used with my 9100 have never failed me at loud shows.  Mine have no mod.

It's pending on the type of B3, you may have the Countryman B3 Omnidirectional Low-sensitivity Lavalier Microphone Item ID: B3W5FF05LSR . I bought some years ago and Chris Church did the mod for me.

BIG thanks 2 all !
Looks like it is a bit difficult to select the right B3 for me needs
but to be on the save side I would go with the mod  ;D

As it seems to really depend on the model, you might as well want to mail your question directly to Countryman.
Ask them which B3 will handle as much SPL as the DPA 4061.

The low sensitivity option has -10Db in reference to the regular B3.

i have a pair of these with the 4.7k mod i picked up last summer. they seem to do ok with loud volume shows for the most part. if you can't luck into an already modded pair in the yard sale as i did, i'm not sure what the options are currently for having the mod done. don't bother asking chris church, he laughed in my face when i asked about it (said he only works on his stuff). ted gakidis makes cables but won't do it. darktrain used to do the mod but recently retired from this sort of stuff i thought. so i don't know. you could try asking sound pros or countryman themselves? does anyone know anyone who still does the mod on this board?

yep, that's the point ... searching for someone who can add the mod to the mics.
I remember this topic was up here several times in the past without any luck ->
so the search goes on

thanks for your input - greetings !

One option that may work are the Y-Cables that either Ted or Darktrain (or both) used to sell with the AT 853 packages you'll see in Yardsale occasionally. I know I had a Y-cable that was  (2x) mini XLR > (1x)1/8" stereo mini plug and the 4.7K mod was apparently built right into the cable itself.
Mics: CA-14(cards & omnis) and CA-11(cards & omnis) ; AT853's(cards, hypers, mini shotguns); Busman BSC-1 (cards, hypers, omnis)
Nakamichi CM300's (CP-1,2,3,4) Nakamichi CM700's (cards, omnis)
Tascam PE-120's (cards, omnis) Countryman B2D
DPA 4061's DPA 4022's; DPA 4080; AKG 480 ck61 and ck63; Naiant AKG Active Cables
Preamps: CA-9100; Naiant Tinybox (12v/48v + PIP 8V); Naiant Littlebox;
