I've actually been using the built in mic for a couple shows and can't complain with the quality, but I thought I'd get the more experienced tapers' opinions on how it fares to an average quality external mic?

Also, I've seen Guitar Center sell them for $400, but eBay seems to be selling regularly for about $300.  Are there a lot of people trying to sell them anywhere else you know of for less than $300?

I got mine off an eBay dealer for $315 and $20 shipping, brand new (and a black one to boot). I've used the internal mics for about a dozen shows (mics were on order). I actually got some decent results, but not as good as shows taped with external mics. I have Church Audio cardoid mics and an STC-9000 pre-amp now, but haven't taped since they arrived! :-\ I'm sure you'll get some good advice here!

Cant remember what I got mine for but I've never got a listenable show from the internal mics.  I would highly suggest external mics with a minimum of a battery box.  I'm very happy with my Sonic Studios rig into the R9. See zappa plays zappa phoenix on dime for an example.

I suppose "listenable" is in the ear of the beholder. ;) ;D Since I'm just a novice, I guess I'm just easily satisfied. But I do hope to hear an improvement with the mics/pre down the road!

BTW, download this and tell me if it's listenable. http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=44676
Since I wanted to tape the show and all I had was the R-09, I took what I could get. Check it out. The file's small.  ;)

I thought my recordings with the internals sounded pretty good, too.  Sure, not as good as with the Church mics I eventually got, but still very listenable to my ears.

I recorded a Mozart concerto from 2nd row center, as an acoustic recording, with the internal mics. It sounds nice, but very centered.
The 4022->v3->722 control recording from the same stand is a bit better.
 a wee bit perhaps ;)

This Johnny Winter show was recorded using the internal mics and sounds pretty good to these ears.
