24/96 playback question
« on: March 19, 2004, 05:12:53 PM »
So it seems to me that in order to play back a 24/96 file I just recorded, one would need a 24 bit soundcard.  Why, then, is this file playing back fine on my laptop's built-in sound?  It also plays fine through my Hercules Game Theater XP on my desktop.  Both winamp and soundforge confirm that the file is 24/96.  Is the OS automatically dithering the playback?  I'm confused ???

I'm almost certain the GT-XP is a 24-bit card, FWIW

You are limited to what your HW can output. So if it says 20 bit DAC thats what you get.

I can playback my raw 24/48 files on my laptop using soundforge but the playback is NOT 24bit. The DAC on my laptop is only 16Bit so thats what reaces my ears. The difference is quite dramatic when you do finnally get this playing back at full bit depth
