CA-14's>pre amp>R09 questions
« on: May 03, 2015, 01:39:31 AM »
Assuming I'm recording loudish shows I believe it's best to use the gain on the pre as much as possible; keeping the recording level on the R09 lower right?  Isn't it best somewhere around 13 or 14?  Appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

That's what I always did with AT853s>9100>R09. Maybe a touch higher with the R09's gain... Don't think I ever went as high as 20 though.

Same thought process would apply if using a M-10, correct higher gain & lower recording level on the deck?

Will read the link in a few moments.......

^^^ To a point, anyway.  It is possible to overload the M10's input and yet have the gain wheel low enough that the meters don't register clipping ("brickwalling").  This might also be possible on the R09, but I am not sure.

The r09 is a good recorder with excellent sound when used line-in. However, don't ever run it below 8. It distorts below that point. It is an internal brickwall issue that will not be seen on the meters.  Not going below 11 is safer.

Just confirming this as best practice for the original R-09 line-on.
I was never comfortable with it's input gain set below 10, and usually kept it around 13-15.

My stealth rig is the CA-14c > CA 9200 > Edirol R-09HR.  The numbering on the record levels are different on the R-09 and the R-09HR, so I will leave it to you to figure out the conversion.  I get great results running the R-09HR around 40 with the gain on the 9200 at +30.  The volume on the 9200 is hovering around the half way point to a little past half way (I would estimate it at about a 6).  This is for a concert in a major venue.  I hope I've helped.

As for using the CA equip. with the Sony PCM-M10, I generally have the CA stuff at the same numbers and the M10 at around 4ish...in a bar/small club atmosphere.
Normal: Nakamichi CM-700's >> SD 744T (or) Sony PCM-M10
Normal: Crown CM-700's >> SD 302 >> SD 744T
Fun times: 3 Crown CM-700's >> SD 302 >> SD744T + 2 Nakamichi CM-700's >> SD744T
Stealth: CA-14c >> CA 9200 >> Edirol R-09HR
Ultra stealth: AudioReality >> AudioReality battery box >> Edirol R-09HR
