Newbie needs some advice
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:11:00 PM »
I picked up a Dcode PS-2 98V mic power supply with Dcode AD-20 Preamp. Can I use this with a zoom h4 or a tascam dr2d and what cables would I need? Mostly would be used with the zoom as I have the dr2d, CA9200, and CA14 Card and omni as my primary. I do realize that the CA-14s do not need phantom power. Thanks in advance for the help.

The PS-2 would be used to power standard mics. If you aren't planning on picking up another pair of mics, I'm not sure how they would fit in your chain.

You could do mics > PS-2 > Zoom H4 (if the inputs at the bottom of the recorder take XLR-in). But your gain would be coming from the Zoom and you would have to hope that it has pretty quiet amp stage.

I'm not sure how to fit the AD-20 in there because it has digital out. You would have to pick up a recorder that has SPDIF in, which the Zoom doesn't IIRC. You could pick up a H120 or a Microtrack II, both I saw recently in the YS. I'm not sure how the MTII would handle the 20/44.1 signal though.

I bought them thinking i would need phantom in the future but ended up getting nak cm300 which doesn't need phantom power. Didn't even dawn on me the pre amp might not be compatible with the zoom. Live and learn.  Looks like these might end up in yard sale or on ebay as I don't need either of them. Thanks for the help.

Yea, you have everything you need already! CA14[Cards/Omnis]>CA 9200>Tascam DR2D ;) Sell the PS2/AD20 and buy some taping accessories ;) The DPA Large Screens fit over the CA14s just perfectly, and Id buy a pair of dead rats or Rode Dead Kittens to fit over the Large DPA Screens for those extra windy days, and youre all set ;)

And are you sure the Nak 300's dont take Phantom Power ??? Do they take internal batteries ???

If all you need is P48, why not just run straight into the Zoom? It has P48, no?

But in any event, it sounds like you don't need P48.  In that case, you don't need the PS/2.  Just power the mics and run them straight into the deck. I used to run my Naks straight into a D8.  I eventually added a Denecke AD20 to get better A/D, but I'm not really sure it made that much difference.

That is my next question. Since the naks are battery powered I could run them straight to the zoom with phantom power off correct?

Yes but id still run them with some kind of preamp. Zoom preamps are known to be very shitty and have LOTS of HISS in them ;)

Agree w/ Bean that Zoom pres are not the best.  But you know, can't hurt to try it for a non-critical recording and see if you agree.

Back in the day I used to run Nak300>TCD-D8. I have no idea if its preamps were better than a Zoom's or not.

Not sure either but don't remember any hiss.  The D8 preamps sucked for the AKG 460 ck61.  When I got my DAP1 things started to sound better and then amazed when I got the V2.

This is with my Nak300 clones straight into mic-in on my DR2D

http://archive.org/details/sts92012-06-29.me80_16bit

This replaced the Dr2D preamp with an Oade m118 preamp (20db fixed gain)

http://archive.org/details/boombox2012-11-07.me80_16bit

Might not be a fair comp because the STS9 show was recorded FOB outdoors while the Boombox show was stage lip indoors, but I think the preamp helped the sound.

I dont think I would waste my money on Nak 300 my mics will be just as good if not better. I would get something like AKG 300 series they are decent sounding cheaper mics. But the Nak 300 to the CA-14 is not much of a jump in quality.

Sorry Too late you already got them :(

Chris your mics are my primary. I wanted a second set so that when I go to a festival this summer I can have a setup for each stage. I wanted the freedom to run card or omni on each rig. Also I just kind of like the look of a full body microphone.
