Post by: blu666z on April 28, 2003, 04:23:57 PM
I can't make up my f-ing mind on what kind of DAT I want.  I am the worst at being decisive and sticking w/ a choice!!!

i own a d8...i have for 6 years of heavy use......but, i believe (someone correct me if i'm wrong) that sony will only repair or has parts for the professional models....these would be the d-100 or the m-1....but if you can find a decent used d-7 or d-8, go w/ it....you will have MANY recording options very soon....one of those will last you till you can get a HD.... ;D

So should I go cheaper and get a used D7, 8 and save my money for some HD recorder that MAY be out soon or not?  Seems like most people kinda shy away from used DATs.

as long as its in good working condition, i would go dat....personally of course....do you have a setup???if so, you could run a jb3 for even cheaper if your ad has an optical....all i'm sayin is, i love my dat and i'd buy a decent used one for the right price...

JB3 does sound nice since I just bought a UA-5 but I don't like the fact that I would have to transfer it off the JB3 before I could do another show.

get the 20G model, and you can do 5-6 3 hr shows before transferring.  ;)

i had a d8 for years before i got my dapi.  sent it off to pro-digital to have it worked on then sold to my friend kim for her starter rig with leonard's stealth mics.  find a good one and save for the HD.  supposedly, you won't even need the v3 in front ???

The JB3 does even better than Scott mentions.  At 44.1k sampling, you can get 11-12 3-hour shows before you fill it up.  36 hours of recording or so--more than enough for a 3-day festival.  Or at least I'd never be recording more than 36 hours in 3 days.  :)  Or, alternatively, if you're on tour you can get alot of shows onto the JB3 before you need to start transferring.

I'm with ToddR.  I wouldn't buy a DAT now for ANY reason.  If all you want is 16/44.1 or 16/48, go with NJB3.  Much more convienient to run, transfer to CDR, etc.

I love mine, and can attest it works beautifully with the UA5.

Don't get me wrong--I was just giving some more info on the JB3.  Personally, I'm split regarding the JB3.  Probably why I run one alongside a DAT.  Very nice box, great for transfers, I'd definitely recommend one over MD.  Compared to DAT, I'm not quite there.  Pretty crappy compared to DAT if you're running analog in.  Digi in, the JB3 is much better, though I still find it's meters to suck.  So unless you have a pre/AD that has good meters, the JB3 will be somewhat difficult to work with.

My preference would be to still go with DAT if you're looking for a unit to record on for awhile (and folks will still be recording on DAT for quite some time to come).  But a new JB3 will be less money than a well-functioning used Sony D7/D8 with 7-pin cable.  If you're thinking about the HD recorders that are just around the corner, a JB3 might be a good unit in the interim until you can pick one of those Sound Devices babies up.

I find the meters on the JB3 just fine.  You get used to them after a few shows, I've found.  I have made great tapes with the JB3, never ONCE had a problem with clipping or too soft after getting used to the meter layout.

And he's going to be running a UA5, with opti out, so no internal A to D there (I agree with you on your point, tho!)

I see absolutely NO reason to buy a DAT now.  More $$ for media, pain in the ass to transfer to CDR, have to maintain the bugger...

JB3 is the way to go..!

Or lappy for 24 bit.

But given the impending 24 bit HD solutions, if I didn't have a laptop already I'd use my JB3 and hold out.

so basically, if you're lazy, buy a jb3, if you wanna get out there and record, go dat... ;)

No, I see DAT as a "me, too" format.  There are NO, IMO reasons to run a used machine with wearing parts that uses removable media nowadays, other than the fact everyone else does!  And if you followed that logic, bean, you'd run shepps  ;)

Sh|t, go 24 bit and buy a lappy!!  That's the way to go.

 ;D ;D ;D

nate,
i was just messin bout the lazy thing...you're right, i'd be running shepps and so would you... ;D if he's gonna run a ua-5 , i say go w/ the jb3 also....it doesn't matter to me cause i got no optical out to run that thing....if i did, i would have one TILL the hd's came out...they are gonna be the cream of the crop.....

24 bit- "the way to go" cant wait nate ;)

Actually, I might be able to purchase it from my office and sell it to you.  I think they want $300 for them...  Pretty good deal, IMO, since it has a brand-new 30 gig drive and dual high capacity batteries...

But then you'd need a new a to d...  and a DVD burner...  And a DAC...

I would say go with DAT. If you want to have access to past recordings you'll probably want one for at home anyway. Not everyone converts to .flac/.shn, like most of us. I would go with a D8 they are tanks. Mine has never given me a problem with 60 or 90m DATS. Otherwise, I would go for a M1 or a DA-P1. I found a DA-P1 with 10hrs, never in the field for $700, and couldn't let that deal go. Just decide how much you want to spend, and ask questions. DAT is not going away anytime soon.
