9V Rechargeables for PS-2 and AD-20?
« on: August 22, 2006, 08:46:27 AM »

Anybody use these?  How are they?  They are only 150 mAH so I don't know if they are worth buying or not.  I know there are a ton of other options for powering these, but I'm a technoidiot and if it's not something I can buy, take out of the box and use, it's not for me.  DIY jobs will result in my apartment being burnt down :)

I'm always paranoid about my PS-2 and/or AD-20 dying so I know I don't get nearly all the juice out of each battery (and 9Vs aren't cheap) so something like this that I could charge up the day of the show and then use that night and repeat for the next show sounds ideal.
Big Rig:  SMK-H8K/U or MSH-1O > PS-2 > AD-20 > CJB3
Sm Rig:  SS DSM-6S (or SP-CMC-12 > SPBM-2)  > MD-MT77
ISO: Cheap iRiver 120 or 140 :)

I found early on that I couldn't trust a single 9v to last an entire set, let alone the whole night, so I picked up 6 of these rechargeables (and a charger):

http://www.thomas-distributing.com/mh-96v230.htm

I don't have a link, but then I bought a battery box that accomodates six 9v's and has two plugs that I can connect to both the PS-2 and AD-20...now I have no concerns about power failure. I just replaced the six rechargeables after a year and hundreds of recharge cycles.

Thomas-Distributing has always been quick and they have deals from time to time...got a free caller ID when I bought the charger.

Just about the same cost and almost twice the run time.

I would think, for the purposes of charging the PS-2 and AD-20 for a few hours, that this battery is overkill...Is it really worth the extra five bucks per battery if you're getting the same from a cheaper battery?

since a 9v alkaline batteries are rated at 570mah, paying extra for a 500mah rechargable is likely a good deal.  When using a ps2 with power-hungry mbho 603a/ka200n mics, I'd be lucky to get 2 hours out of a 9v alkaline battery . . . .

I measured the current draw of (2) MSH-1A's on the PS-2 with a 9v alkaline battery. I got 130 mA. That's a lot to ask of a typical 9v Alkaline battery that rates around 500 mA? That Energizer rechargeable rates at 150 mA.

130 mAh draw only gives you about an hour with the Energizer rechargeable. I built some (8) AA NiMH 2250 mAh battery packs that I use with the PS-2 now. I did a test on Sunday and got 7+ hours before the red light came on. I didn't test it any further, because I think the regulator drops out when the red light comers on.

I dunno it's up to you.  I've found that with all the money and time that I spend to get to the show and get it on tape, I prefer to have an overkill in the battery department for peace of mind.  Dead batteries suck!  In the past the 9V Rechargables have been un-useable.  I haven't tried the 400's posted above nor the 500's but a 25% increase in capacity is nothing to scoff at.

Wow, this weekend I got about 4 hours out of a single 9V Energizer powering my Superlux's.  I set up by the SBD and would just hit record and know that I had 3 hours on the CJB3 so I'd go back to my seats and then just redo it between sets.  140min for Guster (including time between sets), 95 for Ray Lamontagne and about 20 min worth of Rouge Wave.

I got my PS-2 used from here and it had the commom problem of the low battery light always staying on (I think it's a reversed polarity thing or something) so that's why I want to find a no-worry solution as I have no clue when it's going to die.

This looks like the highest capacity of regular 9V shaped rechargeables.  Maybe I'll pick up 4 so I have a spare set for shows.

ive got 4 200mah 9v powermax rechargeable and get @ 3 hours or so from each batt in the ps2 and about 3.5-4 hrs in the ad20.....they dont last as long as the regular alkalines but after several uses it pays you back....i dont mind using them and for the standard 2.5 hr show they are perfect....also a few alkalines in your bag and you have a decent amount of hours to run at festies without paying out the ass for more batts....the 4 batts and the smart charger werent the cheapest, but i use the batts in other devices as well so for me the cost was fine.....the box from soundprofessionals powers both ps2/ad20 and is supposed to extend the run time by alot, but its not cheap either....

last thursday i had to pull a battery swap in mid set. it was done in less than 3 seconds, but there was still a noticeable dropout. so i have moved to the external power runner batteries. i am doing a test now and have been running for 6+ hours with the levels cranked and the battery lights still show 3 of 4 ;D. i will never have to buy 9 volts again. my iriver h-120 is almost dead and it has the same 6+ hours. i was hoping it would record longer ^-^ oh well

Do you get a ground loop humm connecting the PS-2 and AD-20 to the same battery?
I can't power the PS-2 with the same battery I use for my DAT deck without a ground loop.

I have lots of the AA NiMH cells, as I also use them for my PMD671 too.

Bump for a question.
I see the Power Runner pictured in this thread....does it come with the proper connector for the ps-2?  Does modification need to be done?  Doesn't the ps-2 take a mono mini plug?
Thanks for any help you folks can provide.  I'm tired of replacing 9v cells all the time.

the power runner comes with several adaptaplugs, but not the 1/8 mini plug that the ps-2 requires. the proper plug can be purchased at radio shack for a few bucks. i power the ps-2 with 1, and the ad20 with another. i have never used over half of the battery life. i have tested it for 8 plus hours, and am very pleased.

just a question: do the 9v 500Mah lithum batteries require a special charger to be recharged or we can use a normal one?

Or you can get the new Lithium Polymer batteries 500maH

http://www.thomas-distributing.com/ipower-9v-lithium-rechargeable-battery.php

CAUTION - I purchased this bat for use w/ AT853>ST9100>H120 and found that even at full charge they can't power the pre properly (no signal).  I spoke with the supplier and they recommended their MH-9.6v-230.  The Lith-Poly is only rated at 8.4v

I think I'm having the same problem with my sonsosax. I figured it would be OK since the sax can run off 12v, but apparently not off the internals. Damn! They were so nice and lightweight, too.

Has anyone used the 500maH rechargeables successfully with a sax? At first I thought it might be a bad connection, the terminals are a little shorter than a regular duracell...but this looks like a more likely culprit.

Hey I thought I'd chime in on this since I just purchased 40 9v rechargeables and two 10-unit chargers for use at work in a pro-audio situation...

I talked to a really knowledgeable person at thomas distributing about what I wanted them for and that I wanted the longest possible run time.

He recommended the Tysonic 250 mAh, 9.2 volt battery on this page:
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/9v-rechargeable-batteries.php

The powerex ones are either 8.4 at 300 mAh or 9.6v at 230 mAh.

Some devices don't play nice with 9.6v batteries, and the guy told me that they are a bit longer than your standard 9v which could be a problem for a lot of pro audio uses.

I ended up buying 20 powerex 300 mAh and 20 of the Tysonics.

They run our devices (wireless clear-com communication boxes) for close to the same amount of time...with the Tysonics lasting a little longer.  They still run about 2 hours less than the energizer industrials we used to use, but that's ok in our situation.

I'd recommend the Tysonics.  They are actually 9.2volts, and are more mAh than most others.  Seems like a good balance or voltage and longevity. (and they are about 1/2 the price of the lithiums!)

YMMV and good luck!
 ;)

hey
I used to
power both of my Ad-20 and PS2
with one 12v Sealed Lead Acid battery
a powersonic  model PS-1230
12 v 3.4 amp hour
I just wired up a splitter with 2 plugs from Radio Shack that fit them both
and an inline fuse... I think may be I had a resistor in (or two) line too, to help regulate the power drain

after talking with denecke via email
they were very helpful...
I realized and found out that Phantom powering my Rode NT-5's with a 9v cell in it would run for about 35-45 minutes! before horribly degrading
but with this
monster lead acid
I could power both before draining below 7.2 volts
which is where the PS2 and AD-20 have issues
for over 20+ hours

I got a powersonic  PSC-12300A
charger  -  300mA
which is a flaot charger... so it  charges it an d then floats to not over charge or drain it

I then converted this to run my Presonus Firebox
that
I just replaced with a MOTU Ultralite, and may use this system for it

I never had any ground hum.... it always worked fine

so thats  my 2¢
