Cary owners?
« on: August 11, 2011, 12:58:23 PM »
After about 15 years of moving up the Conrad Johnson ladder, I'm thinking about rebuilding my system. I'm leaning toward Cary tubes. I'm currently running a passive bi-amp with tubes on top to VR4JRs and I would like to have a similar arrangement again. The few times I heard Cary equipment it seemed to have a more extended top end and lighter feel than the CJ but it's been a long time and my current CJ gear is way ahead of what I was using then.

Are there any Cary owners here who might have some insight to share regarding a tube based bi-amped configuration?

Best I have come close to comparing was at RMAF, but to my memory the CJ gear was clearly better.

What speakers are you running?

I usually run Cary (tube) monoblocks and a CJ (tube) pre. The pre needs repair so right now I'm running a receiver.

I've always liked this combo. No complaints on the top end.

here's my current system http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?vdone&1109797147&view

I didn't realize that it's been 6 years since I changed anything.  One thing driving this is that I am again considering surround speakers and either I'm going to have to commit to adding some CJ channels or use this as an excuse to change things around.

Terry thanks for the offer. I want to audition some gear before I make changes so after that I might hit you up to look at something in Raleigh. The Cary website shows a couple of dealers local to me so thats probably my next step. I went looking for reviews of that Rocket 88 and found this http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/messages/1484.html. It's interesting because not only do I have the Premier 11A but the Quicksilver mono-blocks were on my short list last time I went though this turmoil of thinking I need to change things around. The reviewer picked the Premier 11a.

What's the minimum the Jr's need to really push good sound?

The CAD mono blocks look nice @ 110 W, but they use that 300 tube that can get wicked expensive.

Do you just want a small output for your top end?

I'd like to know where you go with this.

With unlimited funds, here is my recommendation...http://www.musicdirect.com/p-4537-bat-vk-55-se-tube-power-amp.aspx
