Powering Core HEB mics
« on: January 18, 2008, 01:51:25 PM »
First question :)

Can I power Core HEB mics with a standard batt box or do I need to use their miniXLR for powering?
I don't want to try just in case I fry the mics!  ;D

I would write Core Sound for the definitive answer.

anyone else?
Do you think I could rewire the cable to standard 1/8" plug and power it from standard batt box (or something like Church Audio Preamp)
I don't want to deal with this core BB anymore lol

The HEB mics are basically just a matched pair of DPA 4061's (or 4060's) with a special plug that fits into the Coresound battery box. A number of people on taperssection run 4061's or 4060's terminated with a 1/8 plug and powered by a Church Audio ST-9100. I made my first recording with 4060's a few weeks ago powered that way and it worked great. Best sounding recording I've made in 10 years of taping. A 9 volt battery box should work just as well if you don't need the preamp's gain. You should be fine replacing the HEB's plug with a 1/8 plug.

Chris has already posted that his ST-9100 is great for powering the DPA 4060 series when fitted with a 1/8 jack. I guess mini-XLR's would work with his 3 wire ST-9100 also.

See what he says. I'm guessing a 1/8 jack with his regular ST-9100 might be the most versatile. Then you could use the same preamp with most other mini-mics you might purchase later (maybe the Church Audio cards for situations where omni's wouldn't work well). And you could use the DPA's with a battery box instead of a preamp if you wanted to.
