Nakamichi CM300/UA-5 Bass Problem
« on: June 25, 2005, 03:52:55 PM »
I run the Nak CM300's, and for the time being I am using conventional AA's for the internal power.  Lately, I have been forced to really crank the levels on the UA-5 to get a decent signal to the JB3, which may be causing this problem.

The Nak's come with a built in switchable bass rolloff switch, which I used to tape a rock show last night in a really bad, bassy room.  Again, I had to crank the UA-5 levels pretty hard.  I threw the bass rolloff switch on because I knew that it would be muddy.

I came home, put the show on, and I hear clipping every time the bass drum hits.  Even though I new this was going to happen, I thought for sure that the Bass Rolloff would kill that, but it obviously didn't.

Could the fact that I am having to crank the UA-5's levels be the problem with this bass overload?  This is not the first time it has happened, recently it has been happening with the rolloff switch on and off.

Anyone have any suggestions?

your mics are underpowered by the 1.5v in contrast to the 9v they require.

standard naks are known for their low output, hence the need to crank your preamp.

So it's a combination of the underpowering and also the inevitable Nakamichi curse of low output?

Well, marc, it looks like I may just need to Franken-mod these things!

Get the 206's and you should be good. Do a search on store.yahoo.com (or whatever it is) there is a place there that has em for 5.25 each, and will do priority mail. :)

Have any samples?  Curious what this "bass issue" sounds like.

Sounds like the Nak boom. Even my phantom modded 1000's still have the boom. I have to use max roll off on the V3 to make a good tape, or should I say "pull" a good tape. I have the leegeddy modded 300's, but haven't tried them yet, but I'll still be using roll off on the V3. UA5 has no roll off? And you definitely need 9V's in the 300's. I have 2 xtras sitting right here, you can have 'em.

Yeah, I will post some in a minute.

I'm more interested in the phantom mod "bass issues", but post away if you wish.  I pretty much know what to expect from underpowering the mics with AAs.  The "bass issues" sound more to me like "this particular mic flavor's sonic characteristics", as opposed to an "issue" or "problem".

todd e. is transferring the STS9 shows from june done with the Franken Naks. i only listened to the tapes on small headphones before i shipped the masters off so my recollection isn't great. from what i heard, they sounded pretty good even with the STS9's booming bass.

hopefully the recordings will give us a good representation of the Franken Naks...good or bad.

I'd be interested to hear those tapes for reference, for sure.

So marc, is it possible to mod my CM300's without removing the bodies from them?  If so, is this something that you would be willing to do?

Just a thoght.  Thanks.

nope, the bodies gotta go. original plans for the Franken-Naks was to make the mics easily stealthable.
