Topic: x/y/blumlein question

Tried looking around. Didn't want to try searching for x/y or xy because I would get too much results. I may do one of these tonight for an onstage (not sure yet) and wanted to double check on something. When you plug in the cables, it is the one point to the right get the right and the left one gets the left cable right? Ran into a thread where the description sounded like they need to be switched. Let me know.

you got it.  The confusion stems from the fact that in x/y or blumlein, the mic pointing to the right is generally the mic on the left hand side.

Yeah I run blumlein on stage a week ago and really liked the result. I am taping Zilla tonight and I am guessing that by the configuration I saw in Whistler it should be drums at either end and bass in middle. Seems blumlein would be the best for this.

If you have the ability for lip/on stage placement...try M/S as this will reduce some of the crowd behind you. If you don't have the means to decode (adjust the ratio of the M to S) at home then do it on the fly by listening to phones (may need a good phonre pre for this) to adj the mid to the side.....fun stuff

when running blumlein, watch your included angle (angle between leftmost and rightmost sound sources) - if it gets too wide then the outermost sources will start getting picked up more strongly by the back lobes and you can get some phasing issues. "textbook" recommendation is 90 degrees or less, but you can get away with up to 110 degrees or so.

as JAH pointed out, with blumlein you will get more sound from the rear than e.g. XY, M/S etc.

when processing M/S after the fact it's a big advantage if you have a shuffler plug-in, it will make things sound more spacious or open. I know the Waves S1 processor has one, dunno about other plug-ins.

not cheap - $200 for just that plug-in, lots more if you get one of the bundles (which I have). the bundles are usually discounted fairly well by retailers, but I don't think you can get individual plug-ins that way. good stuff tho.

btw guys - keep in mind that if you want to run blumlein, the soundstage needs to fit within the 90 degree spread of the capsules.  if you use blumlein too close, and some instrumentation is outside the 90 degree angle, you will start introducing phase problems.  otherwise, blumlein is a fantastic way to get the best possible image from smaller groups - i use it on small ensembles and chamber groups.  (pair of royer r-121s - set up is critical, easy to get the capsules just out of line enough to cause phase issues, so be careful and test it, or use a calibrated setup that you can reporduce each time exactly in the field.)
