Edirol R-09HR VS Sony D-50 Which One Is Better?
« on: June 02, 2014, 05:50:00 PM »
I was looking to get another R-09HR but have an opportunity to get a Sony D50 for $250.00

Does the Sony have better built in mics? I have asked a few people about the 2 recorders and got a mixed response.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

I have both. the d50 is by far the better sounding and better built unit. Advantages would be rotary gain and headphone knobs, quieter preamp,
optical in and out, better metering and a powerful headphone amp. Disadvantages would be larger size and 4 AA batteries instead of 2.
The d50 has position adjustable cardioid mics whereas the r-09hr has omni mics. As to which mics sound better, that would probably vary
according to application. I would buy the d50 without hesitation.

For built in mics alone almost certainly the Sony.  Built in omni mics are very rarely useful for what we do.

I had the d50 die on me at JUST past the warranty, Sony service was NOT nice at all to deal with for the fix. Not sure about Edirol

I've a D-50 and for me it's a wonderful recorder. Easy to use and it sounds very clear and natural (You could listen some recordings at my blog http://lo-fields.blogspot.com.es )

The Edirol, for me, plays more in the league of the Sony M-10… another great machine ;)

As Mepaca says, the D-50 has cardioid mics an the Edirol omni mics. This could be a huge difference if you'll use internal mics too much.

You could spend $200. and get a PCM-M10. I doubt I'll ever use my R-09HR again unless the M10 fails. I only use my D50 for open situations cause it's so big. "Just say NO to internal mics."

Thanks for your input. I ended up getting the Sony D-50 for $250

As was indicated, it is best used for open recording. I record a lot of blues shows with full permission.

Some clubs I can use my DPA4061's into the deck, but if I need to use internal, I will be trying the D50.

When I do some SBD recordings I have almost always used my R09HR. I will see how the D50 sounds

Thanks again

Dave

I am going to use the D50 to record either Jimmy Johnson or The Kinsey Report tonight
