Title: MT Battery/CF Question
Post by: jpschust on October 21, 2005, 09:53:41 AM
Planning on running the mt for the first time tonight

184 > 148 > mod sbm1 > mt (16/44 no phantom)

is 1 1g CF per set (so 2g CF total) going to be enough for me or should I swing out and pick up a couple of 2 g cards in the mean time while I wait for my 6g microdrive?

also do you think the internal battery can hold me over with no phantom?

show is yonder mountain.

I'm not familiar with Yonder's typical set length, but a 1GB card should get you ~95 mins in 16/44.  Do yonder's sets ever run over that?

Have you tested your particular CF and MT setup at home. With all the talk about incapadabilies with certain CF cards it would be nice to see  someone discover this at home then at a crucial show.

nah yonder's sets are rarely even that long

im going to bet that this card is fine- it is a sandisk ultraII which I know people have used in the past.  I also know that it formatted fine inside the player and took the new firmware off the card just fine.

i dont have time to test otherwise.

I just recorded Yonder's Boston show using a Sandisk UltraII (4GB), I ran at 24/48 from my S/PDIF input, and it went great, no problems at all.

as far as set lengths, they played an hour first set, and an hour and a half second set.  if they play an hour & a half, you'll be cutting it real close with a 1 gig card in there.  up to you whether or not you want to risk it.

I used a Lexar 80x 2GB @16/44 to get the Foo Fighters in a Club last Monday nght.
(I buy these 80X to use in my Nikon D70 but I think the much more affordable Kingston Pro will do fine)
The show went 02:18:00 and the battery was ok.
With a 2GB card on 16/44 the recordng time is shown as 03:22:00
I have since let it run till dead 4 times and it has recorded for a little over 3 hours each time with lexar 2GB 80X@16/44 WAV
I just ran it out on 16/96 MP3 from a full charge as a test and it lasted 04:27:25 much closer to the advertised 8 hours but I dont plan on recording anything less than CD quality at the very least
This was my virgin attempt and I learned a valuable lesson...I need real microphones that can handle SPL, as the whole show is clipped to hell and total trash but I am keeping the recording as a lesson. I made the total newbie mistake of trying to use the stock little T mic. Oh well at least it can be used as evidence with the wife of why you need to buy REAL stuff to get a good recording.
