Title: Field power for Tascam 680 and V3 - suggestions?
Post by: 3mdk5 on September 13, 2010, 11:57:05 PM
OK guys, help needed here.  I know there are other topics to peruse, but I don't think it's been dealt with as a single topic.  I used to power my V3 with EcoCharge batteries, and a DA-P1 with a custom battery solution (D cells in series, came with my Tascam).  Now I need to move to a 2010 solution for the V3, and need an option for the new 680.  Anything that can do both together, or do I need to buy two separate batteries (with different voltages or not) for each device?

Along those same lines, if you could use one battery to power both devices, if I'm going to bring a backup anyways (especially for longer shows/day festivals), wouldn't it just make sense to run each device off a separate source right off the bat?  (Especially when recording 4-6 tracks with the 680.)

All suggestions welcome and in fact encouraged.  A one battery solution would be best for short shows to keep the gear bag light, but a festival option with backup is of course necessary as well.  Please don't just say "DVD battery", as I've never used one before, and wouldn't know how to compare them.  Links to reputable vendors / information on best "brands" necessary here.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

If it was me, I'd go with two DVD batteries and call it a day.

But, if you need a it works right out of the box solution, get two of these:

I haven't used it with a V3, but one of those will power the DR-680 for more than 5 hours using phantom power on 6 channels.

edit to add...
Some discussion about this battery:

Thanks for the info Chuck.  Two questions:  Did you have to "hack" the Energizer to work with the Tascam?  If so, is this the type of thing that one of the "cable guys" can do for me, since I can't do this myself?  Secondly, can you steer me towards the DVD batteries that you use/that you can recommend?  (Brand or place of purchase/model number.)

Thanks again.

I did have to make a special power cable from my DVD battery to my DR-680. I wanted to have the ability to swap batteries if needed, and I like right angle connectors. But, the cord that comes with the DVD battery works just fine. Contact Ted: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=138965.0 if you have something special in mind, he will be able to make the perfect power cable for you.

This thread has a picture of the DVD battery and some of the part numbers it goes by.

You'll find them in the yard sale here, on eBay and Amazon. Maybe someone who bought one recently will chime in with a link to a cheap one. The batteries I have bought all cost between $20 - $30 shipped. You could also post an ISO for DVD/Walmart battery in the Yard`Sale. You might get a good price on one that way.
