« on: July 27, 2008, 04:05:48 PM »
im putting together a battery pack.
the unit was working fine.
now nothing, the fuse is fine.
is it possible to fry an ad2k+ with blowing the fuse?
i worried and confused.
nothing on the board looks burnt.

found a burnt spot on the board, right around the fuse holder. :banging head:
so the fuse didnt blow, but a chip did ::)

the black plastic piece is the fuse holder.

it doesn't look too bad, it can prolly be fixed as long as the traces aren't burned.

the black plastic piece is the fuse holder.

Looks like a surface mount capacitor. It is quite possible something further down the chain could have died too. Replace and pray :)

doesnt surprise me.
keeping fingers crossed that they cover the cost since the stock fuse did not blow.
it the fuse would have fried properly, this wouldnt have been a problem.

Was this yours Justin, or were you helping someone else build the battery pack?

Just curious when you decided to slut it up if it is yours.

^ well, at least they still support it.  That sucks, though...sorry to hear about the troubles.

I emailed Benchmark after recently getting mine to see about getting a check-up, but decided against sending it in when they quoted me their labor rate.  The tech. who responded, nicely enough, suggested a check up was probably not needed unless there was an apparent problem.  It passed it's field test, and the SLA held up for ~ 4 hours, so I'm going to worry later about a 12v L-ion option and only use it when I feel like carrying around a sack of bricks.

heres a link to how lnarachi and i have been powering our ad2ks since circa '02:

http://simplefuels.com/tapergeek/liion.htm

the cells are cheap if you can find the chargers

this was from the era before high-voltage li-ions were common. iwasnt into luggin lead. nowadays of course there are plenty of liion packs of varying voltage, but youre still looking at about $200 to get something with this capacity+ a charger

with good cells, it will run the ad2k alone for 7+ hrs, and with the switching power supply installed inside, feeding the v3 a regulated 6v, it will run v3+ad2k for 4ish hours

that $150 was for two complete packs (4 cells). in the field, i always used a single two-pack cell, and kept a third handy and hot-swapped it if necessary. i think the last time i bought new 2494 cell kits, they were $1 each+ shipping, maybe came out to $5 each shipped. considering they made a lot of tecras, there will probably be cells around for a few more years.
