Topic: Official Record for amateur bands - Where to place my CA11/14 mics?

Hi all,

I need your help.

I am going to record some shows for amateur band on video and  wonder where to place some microphones to capture the best live feeling.

I will be able to connect a protable recorder with the mixer unit and I am also able to place  2 recorders with any of a CA11/14 Card and Omni mics.

The venue is square., about 150 people.

Where should i put which microphones of these four to mix these records with the mixer record?
Maybe in front of the stage directed to the crowd? Or even hanging from the roof?

I hope you guys have good idead for a good record!

A) How loud will they be (or by proxy, what instruments are they using)?
B) Can you arrange anything on stage (e.g. certain instruments move slightly in one direction or another, adding an additional amp/speaker, etc)?
C) What's the loudest SPL that the Church mics can sustain before overloading? (this is a question to Chris if you don't have that info handy)

Hi, thanks for your reply.
They are 3 musicans- Bassguitar, E-guitar and drums.
I won't be able to move ans speakers and i dont know how they will be set up.
As far as I rember does the church stuff handle about 114db.

the fact that no one has supplied the definitive answer should tell you something...

...that there is no definitive answer!

What ellaguru said.  There isn't a one-size fits all for recording shows.  Even if I'm familiar with a space, and I know where the "sweet spot" is, I don't assume that's going to be the best sounding spot in a room until I hear something mixed because things constantly change.

Listen during soundcheck, as was suggested, and set up based on that.   All the best.

I would put your Omni's on stage split about 10-12 feet (depending on long the stage is) and then put your Card's FOB/DFC

Split omnis on stage and cards FOB in some sort of stereo configuration DIN, ORTF, etc. Or PAS (Point At Stacks, which is just what it sounds like) for the cards, which is what I am doing more often than not these days.
