Describe DIN configuration?
« on: October 10, 2003, 12:48:07 PM »
Easy question:

Been poking around the net reading various information on mic setup....XY, ORTF, etc.  I can't seem to find an explanation of DIN setup.  Is there a FAQ or a website URL someone can point me to to read up on this config?

Thanks

Imagine ORTF with the microphones at 90* and the capsules spaced 17cm for hypers and 20cm for cards.

copy/paste from dpa mic university:

DIN stereo uses two cardioid microphones spaced 20 cm apart and angled at 90° to create a stereo image. The DIN stereo produces a blend of intensity stereo signals and time delay stereo signals, due to the off-axis attenuation of the cardioid microphones together with the 20 cm spacing. If used at larger distances to the sound source the DIN stereo technique will loose the low frequencies due to the use of pressure gradient microphones and the influence of the proximity on these type of microphones. The DIN stereo technique is more useful at shorter distances, for example on piano, small ensembles or used for creating stereo on a instrument section in a classical orchestra.

Yeah, Lee, you called it.  I've been lurking here for quite some time but only recently (last week)
registered for a user name.  I don't tape, but I find the technical discussions interesting.

Nope, not yet.  Both you and kindguy described what I did.  Thanks to you both for trying to help.  Still no attachment.  I'll keep reading.  Sooner or later I'll come across  the answer.  In the meantime, I are a dumbass.   Now off to the archives.

I'm lik'in them.  Overall I don't know that it makes that much difference, but it does streamline the visual clutter on top of the stand a bit.
