Factory Edirol UA-5 ??
« on: June 13, 2005, 06:17:55 PM »
I am exploring Pre-amp options and was looking at a factory UA-5.  Will I be able to use this w/out Modification in the field?  What is the disadvantage of using the Factory UA-5 in the field?  Can't I just attach a R/C 9.6V DC battery in and start recording, or what?  Need some help over here.  Anyone?

1. This topic has been covered. If you did a search for this you would more than likely find your answer.

2. You can only use the stock UA-5 outputs if the USB cable is connected to a computer. I don't think it will send anything to any output (RCA's or digi outs). I could be wrong about that.

EDIT: My search came up with this:

It will send a signal to the RCA analog outs without the computer hooked up.

Ok, Thanks...I did some more research and now understand the difference beteen the different MODs as explaned by Oade Bros.
Audio.  I am downloading different samples of Wmod, Tmod, T+ MOD.

Next question:  Is there a good solution to the Truncation problem when going from 24 bit > 16bit, such as recording with the MOD UA-5 > NJB3?

The UA5 outputs selectable 16-bit or 24-bit, so no truncation necessary running to a JB3 or other 16-bit recorder.

How difficult is the modification?  Are there diagrams anywhere for the do it yourself type folks?  Are there other companies that sell MODs or are the Oade bros. alone in that sector?  I really appreciate the help here folks.

Check the Archive | Pre / ADC / Processor forum's UA5 FAQ.

AFAIK, the Oades are alone.

Shhhhhhhhhhh.  Don't mention those things, people might think that you care  ::)

I modded my ua-5, it wasn't too diffiicult, you have to be pretty handy with a solder gun and have decent vision.

I still haven't gotten those CD's from Sam Bush in the mail to you yet.  They're coming though.

I'm gonna go put my spacesuit on boys, then lets get this dirty cocksucker in the air! ...

I took my stock UA-5 over to a buddy's house for the mod.  He did my mod, and had done his own previously.  I was AMAZED at how simple the mod really was, but of ocurse, before I had seen it, I was very intimidated.  It is some *small* work, though -- in addition to good eyesight and a really precise soldering iron, consider a magnifier.

Three sites with various combinations of good directions and photos:  here, here , and here .

SOMEone should start modding ALL of the ua5s out there.
I dont see why the Oades pull the plug on units they dont sell.  I would think they could just as easily say "this voids the warrantee...and we will not cover the work.  its a MOD at your own risk if you bought it elsewhere".

I'd like to pick up a stock unit, mod it with a fuckin TUBE stage!!
:)
