stealthing with a fanny pack/bum bag
« on: June 16, 2018, 10:47:34 AM »
Hi

I think my normal stealthing tactics are getting found out, as I get searched more often and full pat down.

My main problem with extreme hiding (if you get the idea) is that you have to go to the toilet and unpack & set up

Can anyone give tips for using a fanny pack (us) /bum bag (uk) please - or any other stealth tips to get rolling quicker?

Some people don't like public discussions on this topic here because they think security reads this stuff (hence the Hoff). Personally I don't care, but I'll keep it basic out of respect to those people.

Put the gear in a place where they don't pat. Use your imagination on how to do that.

I know it doesn't bother some people but there has been a shitload of "How do I a sneaky thing" questions around here lately and I don't like it at all.

Figure it out on your own. It's not that complicated.

Putting the details out there for everyone to see is counter intuitive to doing something clandestine in the first place....

I hate repeating myself.........here goes.

Don't send me a pm asking how i beat metal detection, before you ever tryed it once.

Find a mentor, someone you can travel to shows with and learn from. Pay for their tickets, or beer or food or gas.
You will learn more about how things are done, than you can reading all these pages. While there is a boatload of FREE
info on here by many experienced users, some things are best handed down like my grandmom's  paella recipe.

I feel this is on me. My appologies, Ed. I didn't have any intension to upset you. Btw, I have responded to your pm.

It's unfortunately not that easy. It's easier to find an elephant climbing a tree than serious tapers here in Sweden. We are only a few and most of us live very far from each other. I understand things are a bit different in the US where taping seems to be quite a popular hobby. I wish things were the same here but unfortunately it's not.

Most people at taperssection.com are really helpful and I somewhat think that the idea with this forum is to share our experience with fellow tapers. For me, living in the twilight zone, you guys here are more important than you think.

Anyway, this thread is not about me. Just felt the need to repond to your post. Thanks.

In your case your comments and interaction over time made it clear to   >:D tapers you are for real.  That was the point being made.  The point is you did your homework first.

I wasn't talking about you, i DID answer your PM with a very honest and correct answer. I usually don't do that. Just get out there and try is all i am saying. Maybe in Sweden it will be hard
to find a proper mentor, i was thinking about the states here where tapers are easier to find.

Glad to help.  As I said, it is all about credibility and how one asks for help.  The most extreme tactics are best communicated privately among only those who actually need to use such tactics.  This isn't a game anymore despite what some seem to think it is.

I dunno, I still think the attitude is a bit extreme. Who cares if somebody from security reads my tactics? Chances are if they really thought about it for about 90 seconds they could come up with all the things I've ever tried.

Within the last 6 months we've had a security person here, posing as a taper, asking for  >:D advice.

If anyone wants advice from me, I'd be happy to answer via pm.

Yeah, what are they gonna do, remove me from my wheelchair and tear it apart looking for microphones?

In my opinion, no fanny pack is going to help you when they stop you at the door and decided to carefully dig through it a FEW times just to see you have nothing they would typically allow inside. If they are careful enough, they will find your device and not let you through. Believe me, I know!

Also, some venues get really edgy when you walk in with just batteries. That's right - two double AAs in the bin before walking through the metal detector can make people very nervous.

The fanny pack should go thru security out of sight along with other taping gear. My current stealth rig, the only thing that goes thru in plain sight is my hat.

I am grateful that you all are willing to share your tactics. Would someone be so helpful to post a pic of what the whole mics on the hat, wires embedded in the collar, and recording machine in the fanny pack looks like when you are fully disguised? Like a before/after pic. I can’t tell you how helpful reading this forum is to learn how this happens and what I can look for to identify secret recording.

I think I get the point but there are still plenty of places where musicians perform where taking your cell phone out during the performance will result in an usher telling you to put it away or leave immediately and therefore the audience just does not do it . In those environments tapers may not be able to easily blend into the crowd.

which is fine with me. in those cases, security is so distracted/focused on shutting down cell phone filmers that the audio taper wearing the funky hat isn't even on his radar...

in these cases, i usually take video with my phone early in the show just so security will come over and shut me down and i can immediately comply and win his trust that i'm not doing anything bad...

I'm working on the design of a butt-hole recorder.  All you do it squeeze your butt cheeks to start and stop recording.  I'm getting Ween as a sponsor.  Any guesses about the color?

From information Ive read on this forum I’ve been able to figure out the people that are making secret recordings. Male, wearing a knit beret, and a kangaroo pouch are the people to focus attention on.

This right here should be enough to make people stop posting publicly about this crap.

He is right here posting in the thread and you are STILL talking about it.

I don't bother trying to sneak stuff in that much anymore. Too much of a hassle. I try to stick with bands that I know that actually love me taping them. In fact, I'm seeing one play next week at the Catalina Jazz Club. Venues I don't go to or haven't been at in a while tend to make me nervous since protocol is different everywhere around this city (taping allowed/not allowed), so to avoid that hassle, the band actually said they are going to help me bring all the recording gear in with their stuff to avoid any possible problems walking in with it. Awesome folks!

From information Ive read on this forum I’ve been able to figure out the people that are making secret recordings. Male, wearing a knit beret, and a kangaroo pouch are the people to focus attention on.

here ya go... go luck with your nailings...

I think I get the point but there are still plenty of places where musicians perform where taking your cell phone out during the performance will result in an usher telling you to put it away or leave immediately and therefore the audience just does not do it . In those environments tapers may not be able to easily blend into the crowd.

Old school tapers can do it without lights.  Back in the day a red light spotted on the floor was a recipe for getting busted.

Aside from being male I do not fit your "profile".  Luckily I have no interest in taping at your sorry ass venue because I am sure you couldn't stop me.

Don't forget to inform your club manager you are busy trying to find "tapers" and not trying to break up fights or keep people away from the soundboard. Because your manager really gives a huge shit about catching the tapers.

You win...I have to retire now.

Now I have a second thought. Maybe this is an elaborate performance art thing from Dciora. Because i have trouble believing that a real security "dude" would be so openly and obviously discouraging people from sharing stealthing information. Such a despicable creature would most likely lurk very quietly and maybe ask a few polite questions.

You know I had a somewhat similar thought today that he was a TS member’s alt account meant to convince us not to share stealth techniques.

He was just the driver, it was Bonnie Barstow (played by Patricians McPherson) that was the mechanic.

Things posted on the internet are forever.
