Amazing new way to clean vinyl?
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:16:21 PM »
Whoa.  Haven't tried this, just saw it.

This is PVA - polyvinyl acetate.  I wouldn't get too hung up on particular types of glue, though some may work better than others, have less unwelcome additives, etc.

I saw this. Not sure I'd try it first time on a piece of wax that I really cared about.

FWIW, I downloaded a 24/96 rip of a Spiritualized album someone tried this with. He posted a before and after sample, and the difference was pretty big.

Apparently you have to wait eight hours for the glue to dry...I'll pass.

I guess those vinyl record washing machines don't do the trick??

Not everyone has one, or whats to spend the money on one.  Everyone has glue.

It's also possible that this will pull out material that a machine won't.  And it's a way of demonstrating that your current cleaning technique may not be as good as it can be.

Properly cleaning is essential to get a high quality digital capture.

been reading about this over at the steve hoffman forums for quite some time....still afraid to try it..perhaps picking a questionable vinyl here and giving it a shot is in order.

Mario, an admin over at LencoHeaven, username Mopic at audiokarma, is pretty well credited with the wood glue technique.
it will not stick to the record, but you have to keep it off the label. Its supposed to be a fine cleaning technique, but, as mentioned, takes a long time to dry.
I use an vacuum-based RCM, and am happy enough with it.

Hell I use a brush and cleaning fluid and I'm happy with that.  I don't bother transferring music over as my rig is far from reference quality.  To each his own!

I've always been a brush and cleaning fluid guy as well (and the occasional dishwashing liquid and warm water for the really grimy LP's), but this might be worth trying on a boring, rainy day for shits and giggles.  Interesting stuff.
