My R-09HR arrives tomorrow....
« on: September 10, 2008, 08:05:22 PM »
Since I am totally new to the world of this type of recorder, I have a few questions regarding the memory card.  I bought a SanDisk SDHC 8 GB card today.  I had no idea I had to take note of the class of the card.  This one says Class 2.  Is this good?  Is this bad?  What does it mean?  Will it run in my R-09HR when I get it tomorrow or will I be needing to take this card back to the store?  I've been reading posts about error messages and formatting problems due to memory cards, or the wrong memory cards for that matter.  I'd like to steer clear of any headaches and wrong purchases.  Can someone shed some light here for me?

Thank you,
RJ

I'm not sure about the R-09HR, but I'm running a Sandisk 4gb Ultra II SDHC Class 4 in my R-09. I'd check the Roland R-09HR site to see if there's a list of recommended cards. There could be something here in the ongoing R-09HR discussion. I can say the card I'm using hasn't given me any problems I didn't create myself. Have fun with the R-09HR. I've had a blast with mine. UGH.  I am getting a little nervous now.  There is no list of recommended cards to use on the Roland site, owners manual or the practical guide.  All it says in the manual is that some cards work, some do not.  I am praying I didn't waste my money over here.

I use Class 6, but I think you should be fine with Class 2.

This one says Class 2.  ... will I be needing to take this card back to the store?

If you can return it, you probably should.  A Class 2 card only writes from 2-5MB per second, so you might get errors when recording at higher bit rates.

I have the class 2 Sandisk card. I recorded at 24bit/48khz for two hours and had no problems. As I understand it, the amount of data transferred even at 24bit/96khz is much less than the rate of the card. My device was the Olympus ls-10.

Well, I am a happy man today.  My Edirol arrived today and I am very pleased.  It is much smaller than I anticipated.  It's like the size of a pack of 100's sized cigarettes.  Anyway, regarding the memory card that I originally bought....  I returned it and bought 2 SanDisk Ultra II 8GB SDHC cards.  They were $40 each at Best Buy.  At 96k, I have 3:54:40 of recording time.  This times 2 (2 cards) will insure I am set in terms of space.  I dig it so far.  Tomorrow, I test it out with my band.

Thanks for all the advice on these forums.  You are all invaluable to me.  Thank you!!!!

RJ

Is there concensus on this list whether to go 24/48 and 24/96?  Always thought 24/96 was a little bit of overkill in terms of whether or not it provides added sound quality, but then again can never hurt to have highest resolution possible for whatever may be around the corner in terms of audio enhancement.

I look at it this way, record the highest level possible, as you can never go back and re-record that show... and to archive the show to DVD is very cheap and (kind of) reliable

My ears could never hear a difference between 24-96 and 24-48.  The jump from 16 to 24 bit was a noticable difference though.  YMMV
