Anyone know if these two omni's are comparable? CA-14 / MS-MCM-3
« on: September 28, 2016, 06:51:30 PM »
I want to incorporate more split omni action into my recordings, but don't like the bulk of my Studio Project C4's for both top-heavy and sight-block reasons.  I'd love a pair of DPA 4060's, but not close to my budget.  So, I am looking at these two options:

Sound Professionals: MS-BCM-3    http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=MS-BMC-3

Church Audio: CA-14  http://www.church-audio.com/viewitem.php?productid=8

I am familiar with the CA-14, and have a set of the cards, but don't know about the MS-BCM-3 and would like to get them sooner rather than later.  If the MS-BCM-3 are comparable, I'll order them since they are ready to ship.  I am well aware of the make and shipping time for the CA-14.  I don't want to waste money on the SP's if they are not in same class as the CA's.

** I'll be running AKG 461's and/or Studio Projects C4 (cards) in the middle.

Can't comment on the SP model but Jon at Naiant makes the X-X Omni and it's affordable, small and configurable

Cant comment either but I know if the choice was between

- CA-14 omnis and
- CA-11 omnis (mark II)

i'd go for CA-11 omnis (mark II). Best sounding miniature omnis I've had. (I had chopped naks cm300 omnis, ca-11 omnis, ca-14 omnis and at853 omnis)
mics schoeps mk22/mk4/mk41 (matched) | nakamichi cm-300 (JB mod/cp1/cp2/cp3) | nakamichi cm-50 | primo em4052pmi4's | sp-cmc-4u/at-853 4.7k mod (shotguns/h/c/sc/o) | ca-11 c/o | ca-14 c
power ca-ubb | ca-9200 | nbob actives > baby nbox | schoeps cmbi (pair)
recorder roland r-05

I would second these. I'm not familiar with the X-R omnis, but that could be an option also with right angle cables or adapters for splits. I don't know what your rig setup is but with Naiant mics you may have to seek out your own mounting system. With the X-Xs, I just gaff them to outriggers or kick drum stands when on stage.

I really like my Countryman B3s. Check out this: https://archive.org/details/furthur2012-07-11.bryonsos and compare it to the other sources. I knew there would be a bunch of tapers, so I decided to play with my new toys. IMHO it sounds as good or better than the sources from full bodied mics.

Thanks.  The CA's are at the top of the list, just looking for something with a faster delivery time that is on par with these.

These sound great, but out of my immediate price point at $260 each.  I'm looking for a solution under $150 total.  Thanks for the suggestion as I may look to these in the future if I don't buy now.

Do you have any sample recordings with the X-X's?

Yeah, I'll pull out a couple raw samples and put them up on google drive.

X-X samples, some variety to give you an idea. I mainly use them with a front/back or X/Y pair in the middle.

Stealth at a Reggae show : mics at 180* with about 20cm separation; behind the board at the right PA; approximately 15m from stage. Minimal EQ on this one.

Moonalice: mics at 180* 1.3m apart; stand 7' up about 10m from stage, center; normalized from the raw file.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6xj5Qw14XoDX0FrWkpDc2ljaDg

The Waybacks: mics AB 1.3m apart, stand at 8' about 30m from the stage, center; from raw file.

edit: The first is through a Naiant PFA, the others PIP. They are also only the X-X channels if i didn't make that clear.

Hey, those sound great!  Thanks for posting the samples.  Just what I needed to help make an informed decision.  What recorder did you use with PIP?

I ran them with PIP from a DR-60Dmk2. The only regret I have on the X-Xs is not getting them with separate leads and a y-cable into the recorder. Then wide stage spreads would be easier or I could use 1 center omni if I chose to setup a near-coincident pair at stage lip. I ended buying a pair of his older MSH-1s to add some omni filer when up that close. Other than that issue I really like them.
